Author Interview

What was your favorite chapter (or part) of FINDING MISS MCFARLAND to write and why?

That’s a tough question. I really enjoyed writing Delaney’s character and Griffin’s reactions to her. However, I’d have to say that I had the most fun writing the first kiss scene. I love how Griffin just came unglued, grabbed her, and hauled her to her toes.


What about your characters surprised you while writing?

Delaney’s fragility surprised me most of all. I mean, I knew her backstory of course, but I didn’t imagine how it made her feel until I let her tell me.


How did you select the cover for FINDING MISS MCFARLAND?

I didn’t. My fabulous editor sent it to me after the amazing Avon art department worked their magic.


How long do you generally let a story idea ‘marinate’ in your head before you start the book?

Usually, a couple of weeks, or maybe a month; however, writing the last in a series allows me to let it “marinate” even longer.


What are the most important elements in good romance writing, in your opinion?

For me, the answer is identifiable characters. No matter if the subgenre of romance is historical, contemporary, paranormal, etc., if can get inside the protagonist’s head, I will enjoy reading the story.


I read on your website that you signed a contract for 3 more books with Avon Impulse.
Congratulations! What’s your biggest challenge as a writer? How did you overcome it, or how are you working to overcome it?

Thank you! : ) I’m very excited and honored to have this opportunity! My biggest challenge as a writer is focusing, sitting in the chair, and organizing my day in blocks of writing time and marketing time. I make a daily attempt to overcome these by leaving myself handwritten notes, such as: FOCUS and WRITE!. I also try to plan my weekly Facebook posts in advance so that I don’t give myself an excuse to venture into the internet labyrinth until my daily word count is complete.


Do you prefer to write in silence or with music?

I plot with music. Write in silence.


Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

There have been so many that I can’t possibly boil it down to one. Being offered the chance to write a series for Avon Impulse based on a novella still amazes me. I have an incredible editor who is my biggest supporter. I just met her for the first time at the RWA conference, where I mingled with dozens of insanely talented authors. Then to top it all off, signing a contract for three more books, and then hitting the USA TODAY bestseller list has been a dream come true.


What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Note to self: when stumped on a question like this, do not ask my sister. I instantly had a list of things that even surprised me. Lol! But seriously, I think people would be surprised to know that I used to jam AC/DC through my Walkman headphones when I walked to junior high school, and I currently own 237 air-guitars.


Finish the sentence: One book I wish I had written is….

Jude Devereaux’s A Knight in Shining Armor… sigh. I LOVE that book!


What project are you working on now?

I’m currently writing The Rakes of Fallow Hall series for Avon Impulse (due out in early 2015), and falling in love with these heroes a little more every day.



About the Author

I fell in love with fairy tales and the romance behind happily ever after at a very young age. Like a lot of you, I tweaked the fables bit by bit in my imagination until they suited me perfectly. By the time I was eleven, a teacher encouraged me to start writing.

Throughout the years that followed, my teachers remained my most fervent supporters, giving me the tools I needed to continue my journey as a writer.

My husband and I have two teenage boys, who are heroes in their own right. For now, we live in a small Midwestern town near Lake Michigan… until a time in the future when a new adventure calls us to other shores.

Warrior Ranks in the Majat Guild

Thank you very much for hosting my blog post. I appreciate this opportunity to talk about the Majat Code series and my newest novel “The Guild of Assassins”.

 

In “The Guild of Assassins”, a large part of the events revolves around the Majat Guild, a fortress that trains warriors for high-level mercenary services.  The value of the Majat warriors is not only in their exceptional combat skill, but also in their full political neutrality. They have no loyalties to anyone except their own Code. And this means, once a Majat warrior is hired, he or she will not deviate from the contract, and cannot be bribed or swayed to change sides. A prototype for this type of warriors actually existed in Europe: Swiss guards, hired for protection by many European monarchs, and still composing the ceremonial guard in the Vatican.

 

The Majat warriors all train together since childhood, but much as it happens in sports, some are better than others, and some show tendency for a particular type of weapon. When their training is complete, they undergo a ranking, which is equivalent to graduation and signifies their transition to the warrior status. Majat warrior’s ranks are a direct reflection of their fighting skill, driving their assignments, and ultimately, their price. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Majat tend to think of these warriors in terms of the money they bring to the Guild. For this reason, they equal their warrior ranks to gems. There are five: Jades, Emeralds, Sapphires, Rubies, and Diamonds.

 

Jades and Emeralds specialize in internal security, favoring ranged weapons and comprising the Majat Guildmaster’s personal guards. The other three ranks, as well as some of the non-Gem warriors, go out on assignments, for pay.

 

Rubies and Diamonds are the best. Accordingly, they cost a fortune to hire, so that common people can rarely afford one. They are used mostly for running assignments for the high nobles, and more often than not, these assignments require assassination of a rival or someone who stands in the way. Thus, in common speech, people refer to Diamonds as “assassins”, and the Majat Guild became known as “The Guild of Assassins”.

 

In my novel, two top-level Diamond assassins, Kara and Mai, go against their orders and must face the ensuing actions from the Guild. All this is orchestrated by a powerful enemy, who is acting behind the scenes with a goal of bringing about the downfall of the Majat Guild--the only power that stands in their way of usurping the kingdom. My book has lots of action, adventure, and romance, and is set in an intricately built world that draws on the history of Medieval Europe, Middle East, and the Orient. I hope readers enjoy it, along with its prequel, “Blades of the Old Empire”, which has been released earlier this year.

About the Author

Anna Kashina grew up in Russia and moved to the United States in 1994 after receiving her Ph.D. in cell biology from the Russian Academy of Sciences. She works as a biomedical researcher and combines career in science with her passion for writing. Anna's interests in ballroom dancing, world mythologies and folklore feed her high-level interest in martial arts of the Majat warriors. She is a recent medalist in the ForeWord Book of the Year and Independent Publishers Book Award contests.

Ronan made a right onto a narrow road. In the beam of the headlights, the thin, black rutted path wrapped around what appeared to be solid rock. Mist rolled across the road like gauzy balls of vapor conjured by some secret sorcery, adding another layer to the suddenly eerie surroundings. Paisley shivered, trying to bring her thoughts back to reality from the mystical part of her soul.

 

Bryce shifted in his seat to glance over his shoulder, the beads in his braids jangling. “We’re almost there. Once we cross the moat.”

 

“The moat. Yes. I saw the lovely pictures on your website. I wish it were daylight so I could see it.” I also wish I knew what kind of animals I just heard, and what the owl meant when it said I was the answer. The answer to what?

 

Faint lights appeared on their left. Ronan nodded toward them. “That’s Mathe Castle. We call it Matheson Lodge now. Tomorrow you’ll see the castle is perched on granite cliffs like a queen on her throne.” He slowed to cross the bridge over the moat and, when he did, the owl soared into the fog as if his escorting detail were over. “Looks as if the bloody storm knocked the power out again. I’ll have to power up the generator.”

 

Paisley stared at the darkened shape, illuminated and shadowed by twin torches flanking each of the five stone steps leading to the massive doorway. Their flames danced in the wind, bouncing, twirling, and bowing.

 

A mountain of granite sculpted into the shape of a man—or so it appeared—stood between the rows of torches. His stance wide, proud chin jutted into the howling wind as if he commanded its force. Long dark hair billowed. Eyes blazed with arrogance. A width of plaid draped diagonally across his broad chest while his kilt flapped in the tempest.

 

Fascination and foreboding swept through her. Her stomach tensed. Her breathing quickened. Whoever he was, she wasn’t eager to meet him.

“Still looking for that interview?”

“Not from you, cowboy.” She didn’t even bother to turn and face him.

“Ugh! You wound me.” He clapped a hand to his chest, just above his heart.

Derek wasn’t sure if she’d known it was him or didn’t care who it was. He caught a whiff of vanilla and peaches and inhaled deeply, feeling a jolt of desire strike him in the gut. Her deep red hair shone like fire from under the new, black Stetson and his fingers itched to see if those tresses were as soft as they appeared. She glanced over her shoulder, pinning him with an irritated glance as he grinned down at her. 

“I highly doubt that. I’m sure there are plenty of other women around here for you to harass.” She turned back to the animals milling in the large pen behind the chutes.

“Look, maybe we got off on the wrong foot.” He looked down at the back of her head and wondered again if flirting with her wasn’t a huge mistake. “I get the feeling you think I’m a jerk.”

“Oh, I don’t think you’re a jerk,” she interrupted, glancing backward at him. He arched his brows in surprise. “I know you’re a jerk.” He laughed as she shoved his arm from the fence so she could pass, causing him to stumble forward.

“Now if you don’t mind, I have a job to do and an interview with Mike Findley.” She shot him a coy smile. “I guess your boss sees an interview with me as good publicity after all. Maybe that’s why he’s the owner and you’re, well, you.”

With a twirl, she headed back toward her news van. The waves of her red hair swayed at her waist, making her back seem ablaze and he felt his stomach tighten, wondering how it was possible the he still smelled vanilla and peaches over the pungent scent of cattle and dust.

Yep, she’s trouble with a capital T.

My Rambles

THE SWEET SPOT is a full-sized prequel to Stephanie Evanovich's Big Girl Panties. It can be read as a standalone. Although, I have yet to read Big Girl Panties (it's on my TBR list), I had no problems jumping in and following the story. 

 

At its heart, this story is about what happens when your Mr. Rights finally arrives and he not the way you imagined. How far would you be willing to go to hold on to what feels like true love?

Well of course, the first thing that caught my eye about THE SWEET SPOT was the cover. I think that I assumed too much about the sweetness angle based on the cover. Don't get me wrong. It's there. The way that Chase wooed Amanda had me grinning. The boy was good. Really good.

What I couldn't picture from the cover was Chase's spicy little kink - spanking. It took Amanda by surprise too. LOL! Going from great "vanilla sex" (Chase's term) to "Surprise! I'd like to have great vanilla sex with spanking sprinkles, please," would be hard for a lot of people to accept. Amanda approaches it with curiosity and humor. However, the road to romance was not without its bumps.

Evanovich had me pleasantly worried for a while. I was really pulling for their happily-ever-after. I had to keep reminding myself that Chase and Amanda are married in Big Girl Panties and this is a romance novel - so of course it would eventually work out. Whew!

In spite of the blurb, I didn't see this story's arc unfolding in quite the way it did. And that is a good thing. I'd recommend this book to readers who are fans of sports, spanking, or contemporary romances.

 

 

NOTES: This is not a BDSM book. The sex is hot, but won't burn your eyes.

My Rambles

 

This is the first book that I have read by Sara Jane Stone and my first "in love with my best friend's sibling" storyline. [Honestly, I think that I have been subconsciously avoiding this troupe.] I am happy to say that I was really pleased with Stone's writing and the storyline.

 

Georgia Trulane has recently gotten out of the military and returned to her hometown. Determined to live life to the fullest after a tough tour in the military, Georgia becomes sort of a thrill seeker to help keep the war demons at bay. To help keep her out of trouble, Liam (Georgia's brother) gets her a job as his best friend Eric's nanny. [Eric has recently become a guardian to his young nephew. Eric's sister and her husband were killed in a car accident.]

 

Although they have been friends since childhood, Georgia and Eric never had to own up to their attraction to each other. That is - until they end up living in the same house. When Georgia's carpe diem attitude and Eric's do thing right thing attitude clash, romantic sparks start to fly and it's more than either one bargained for when they agreed to the work arrangement.

 

Neither wants to expose their feelings or their issues. Drama ensues.

 

Stone's storyline touches on a number of serious issues with a light and entertaining hand. I found the characters to be engaging and relatable - including Eric's little nephew. I read the entire book in one day. I really liked that Georgia is a former solider with PTSD. It's usually the guy in the rough situation - especially in romance novels. 

 

Full Exposure is sexy, funny, and heart-warming. It has appeal across genres.

Oh... did I mention that Full Exposure is sexy? When those romantic sparks flare... oh my.

 

I am looking forward to the release of Caught in the Act (book two in the series) this fall. It's centers around Georgia's brother, Liam. I am also going to pick up a copy of Command Performance - another book by Sara Jane Stone.
