The Faberge Secret by Stephanie Burkhart

Elise Goodwin operates a heritage museum in Brattleboro, Vermont. Needing to buy some items for her museum, she travels to Boston and acquires a delicious surprise that would excite any curator – a Faberge Egg.

Enter Russian businessman Dimitri Romanov, the true owner of the jewel. He's following a lead hoping to reacquire his stolen egg when he bumps into Elise. He can't hide his attraction to the petite brunette with doe-like eyes.

Dimitri's rival, Gustav Kelch, wants the rare Faberge jewel and will do anything to find it, including destroying Dimitri's life. Can Dimitri keep Elise and his Faberge heirloom safe or will his attraction place their lives in jeopardy?

EXCERPT

His gaze was as soft as a caress. He reached out and tucked a stray tendril of hair behind her ear. Then slowly, he curved his hand around the nape of her neck and moved closer so there was no space between them.

Their lips skirted each other's, teasing, tempting... until Dimitri's mouth finally captured hers in a drugging kiss.

His lips were firm and persuasive. He smelled of soap and sandalwood. Something intense flared within her, and she fisted her hands around the lapels of his coat. Her body betrayed her desire. His erection pressed against her thigh.

All of a sudden, an all-crushing fear consumed her. He was hard for her. It was too soon, too fast. She broke the kiss and pushed him away.

"Elise--" Dimitri began.

"Umph!"

Elise's heart jumped. She swung around and looked at the door.

It stood ajar.

"Lucy!" Elise forgot all about Dimitri's kiss and rushed inside with him right behind her. Concern spiked within her the second she saw Lucy.

Her friend's hands and feet were tied to a chair, and a gag was in her mouth. The room had been trashed. Their suitcases had been turned over; their clothes and books tossed haphazardly about.

Fear knotted inside Elise. She rushed to the chair and took off Lucy's gag. Dimitri untied the knots at Lucy's feet, concern for her friend evident in his eyes. Elise was thrilled that Dimitri had helped her with no hesitation or reservations.

"What happened?" Elise asked. "Who did this?"

"They were looking for the egg," Lucy said. She glanced at Dimitri, but instead of her earlier resistance to him, gratefulness filled her gaze.

Dimitri froze and glanced up, his stare drilling into Elise. "Egg? A Faberge egg?"

Elise loosened one of the ropes around Lucy's hand and looked at Dimitri, perplexed. "What do you know about Faberge eggs?"

He muttered something in Russian, finished untying the knot around Lucy's other ankle, and stood, straightening his shoulders.

"That's what I lost. What I've been looking for -- my Faberge egg."

MY RAMBLES

At just 88 pages, The Faberge Secret hit the right notes with me. I am fond of shiny things, historical tidbits, steamy romance, and Russian accents.

I didn't know a lot about Faberge eggs before reading this story. The author did a good job of weaving in historical information with the romance and adventure. I liked being able to learn a little bit about Faberge eggs and related Russian history along with the heroine, Elise.

I also really liked Elise's willingness to put herself out there in spite of the risks to her safety and her heart. If placed in similar situations, I would probably choose the conservative route and miss out on all of the danger, excitement, and heady romance. Where's the fun in that? Seize the day! And that hunky cerulean-eyed Russian!

FYI - There is a bit of insta-love going on here, but it works for the story.

The Faberge Secret is a fast and fun read. I think fans of contemporary romance will enjoying spending an afternoon with Dimitri and Elsie.

I wonder if Lucy, Elise's best friend, will get her own story?

Kinky Vanilla Romance is pleased to share The Portal Guards by Marcia Colette, a fantasy romance available now from Mocha Memoirs Press. This review post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions.

The Portal Guards by Marcia Colette

Evelyss Nontage is a housekeeper at the Talbert Estate who has been hired to keep order. Her family is also relying on her to learn of the location of a mysterious portal that allows those from the Fringe Line to pass into the human world. For her and her loved ones, it’s a matter of life and death.

Brahm Gushon is an occupant who has been with many of ladies in waiting. He’s tired of them, too. He’s drawn to the solitary housekeeper who has her mind two things. Her duty and her loyalty to the household. No one will break her concentration. Not even him.

Evelyss and Brahm must work through their frustrated feelings to send a deadly intruder back to hell…assuming he doesn’t take both of them with him. It’ll take another leap of faith in each other to overcome the second enemy they don’t see coming.

EXCERPT

Evelyss hurried down the hall. That infuriating man was supposed to bring the girl down. She wasn’t supposed to have to go up and get her. But time was short and those who had already brought down their women were headed into the darkness to patrol the path to the portal before finishing their Sixth Night celebrations.

The entire town of Naya would be there, including just pretty much everyone on staff. Nobody dared miss the rounds of alcohol and fireworks in the street. Sixth Night only happened once a month during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Everyone worked so hard throughout the region and needed a break, so Sixth Night was the answer to that. Whether you were human or otherwise, old or young, it didn’t matter.

Evelyss wouldn’t be there. This was her night to work before taking the next three days off.

Thankfully, the door was open. Evelyss wouldn’t have to knock and interrupt something that would surely leave her red-faced and upset.

Just as she was about to enter the room, Brahm flew out, tucking his shirt into his pants. He slammed into her so fast and hard that she fell backward, with the full length of him on top of her.

Fury roared inside her. She opened her mouth, ready to light into him, when she noticed something else below his waist. Though it wasn’t standing erect at the moment, there was no missing the warm member that rested against her crotch.

Evelyss gulped. “C-c-can you get off me, please?” Great. As if that was supposed to sound angry at him for invading her personal space.

“Uh…”

MY RAMBLES

The Portal Guards is a 57-page novella with a fabulous cover, a feisty housekeeper heroine, and a swoon-worthy guardian hero. This little bit of fantasy romance was just what I needed to break up my reading monotony.

There is a lot going on in the pages. The story takes places on the Talbert Estate, in a dimension outside of the human world. Many of the beings working at the Talbert Estate are not what they seem and everyone has a secret. Even the estate has a secret. There is a secret portal on the property that allows passage between worlds. When an intruder breeches the estate's protective magic, Evelyss and Brahm (who have a strained relationship at best) are forced to work together to protect the portal and themselves.

I love stories where the characters fall into a romance unexpectedly. It would be great to see Evelyss and Brahm get their own full length novel. I am also curious to learn more about some of the supporting characters and concepts mentioned in the story. There is a whole new world to explore on the other side of the Fringe Line.

Looking for an interesting quick-to-read romance? The Portal Guards is sure to please.

I received a copy of this book exchange for an honest review.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bestselling author Marcia Colette didn’t discover her love for reading until her late teens when she started reading John Saul and progressed to works by Bentley Little, Stephen King and Laurell K. Hamilton. Her reading tastes convinced her to write paranormals where curses cause people to shift into spiders, psychotic and telekinetic mothers are locked away in attics, and murderous doppelgangers are on a rampage. Let's not forget about the hunky werecheetah coalitions who live throughout North Carolina. As long as she can make it believable, that's all that matters.

Born and raised in upstate New York, Marcia now lives in North Carolina with her mom and beautiful daughter. They’re not raising zombies in the backyard. There aren’t any hellhounds living in the den, only a rabbit and a cockatiel. So where she gets her ideas is as much a mystery to her as anyone else.

The best place to find her--when she's not stirring up trouble--is on her blog where she loves connecting with readers.

Storm’s Passion by Christine Young

SHE MADE A PROPOSAL...

Life strikes Storm Graham a shattering blow when she learns her father has bartered her to a man she detests. Storm is beautiful, self–assured and fiercely independent, and refuses to be a pawn in her father’s schemes, yet she can find no way out of this bargain made in hell. Going on the offensive she asks the wealthiest man on the eastern coast of England to marry her, never believing she might fall in love.

HE TRIED TO REFUSE...

For Hadden Johnston life has provided everything he ever wanted, including a sanctuary for homeless children. He is wealthy, handsome and happily unencumbered...until stunning Storm Graham marches into his life and proposes a marriage of convenience. Yet this type of marriage to a woman who inflames his senses is far from acceptable. If he’s going to be tied down, he will move heaven and earth to have this woman warming his bed.

EXCERPT

"No! I'd rather jump off hell's cliff north of here." Storm's hands were fisted at her side, her insides churning. What could her father be thinking? But it was her father, and she knew he thought only of himself.

"What?" Bradford appeared stunned at her revelation, his eyes narrowing. His cheeks turned red, and a small drop of saliva slipped down one corner of his chin.

"You heard me father." She turned from the old man who thought to call himself a man, unable to look at him, yet resigned to see this through to the bitter end if that's what it took. She would find a way to thwart his plans.

"You can't refuse. I have a signed contract." His slack jowls quivered, his cheeks flaming with the rage he wasn't holding in check. He shook his fist in the air as if to make his point clearer.

"This is not the Dark Ages. What kind of contract." Back stiff, she faced the man who'd sired her. He was mean- spirited and meant nothing to her. No familial feelings had ever existed between them.

"A written agreement, signed and notarized, promising you will marry Charles Robertson. In this matter, you'll do as I tell you." He moved forward in his chair as if this would accentuate what he said.

MY RAMBLES

By all accounts, Storm Graham is brazen, strong-willed, and beautiful. She despises her father and loves her horses. So when Storm discovers that her father has signed a contract that forces her (and her horses) into the hands of one of the region's wealthiest and most despicable bachelors, she does not take it lying down.

After evaluating her options, she determines that her best bet is to convince the region's wealthiest bachelor to marry her. She believes that Hadden Johnston's money and power can protect her from the evil clutches of Charles Robertson (and his father). In return, she can offer her interest in the family's horse and brewery businesses. The problem? Hadden and Storm are merely business acquaintances and neither is really interested in getting married.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Storm has nothing to lose by proposing marriage. Well, maybe a little pride. And Hadden knows all too well the ugliness that lurks in Charles' mind. How could he not try to intervene on her behalf? Combine that with the sparks of attraction between Hadden and Storm, and you'll end up with a marriage of convenience that had me wanting my own Hadden.

"This is an outrageous game you're playing Miss Graham. But I do understand how loathsome marrying Charles would be. I wouldn't wish it on my best friend and for some reason I've a need to protect you." -  Hadden Johnston

Rich, powerful, and cruel, Charles is also not one to take things lying down...

Storm's Passion is a fast-paced, easy-to-read novel. I read it over a weekend. Luckily for us readers, the marriage turns out to be more than Hadden and Storm bargained for. They have a chemistry that is fun to read and watch grow. Storm isn't the stereotypical damsel in distress. She is a heroine that you really get behind and pull for as the story plays out.

I think that Storm's Passion is a great choice for people who enjoy historical romance stories. I must admit, I was a little thrown off by the book cover at first. It didn't really scream historical romance to me. But don't let all that hunkiness fool you. The book is set in England in 1818.

I look forward to reading more of Christine Young's work.

NOTE: I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Captivate Me & Iris by S.J. Pierce: Review Tour + Giveaway

Kinky Vanilla Romance is pleased to share Captivate Me and Iris by S.J. Pierce as part of a book review tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours.

http://xpressobooktours.com/2014/06/13/tour-sign-up-captivate-me-iris-by-s-j-pierce/

CAPTIVATE ME by S.J. Pierce
Publication Date: April 1, 2014
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis

“My mom had always told me – when you meet “the one”, you’ll know; they’ll captivate your heart the moment you lay eyes on them. I had always wondered, though, if my mom’s words of wisdom were finite – if they applied to everyone. Maybe those who had found their one great love were the lucky few, and maybe the rest of us would have to settle for less than earth-shattering.”

Seventeen-year-old Kat Walsh is a Gifted – a human with paranormal abilities. With her mom a former Angel and her dad a dream prophet, it’s always been in her genetic make-up to be extraordinary. But, unfortunately for her, the world can’t handle the strange or unusual. So when she slips up and uses her powers at her high school in Ireland, the entire student body treats her like a freak – even the ones she thought were her closest friends.

Broken, but hopeful for a fresh start, she allows her parents to enroll her in a boarding school buried deep within the forests of a small Colorado town. At Midland Pines, School for the Gifted, she feels as though she can finally be herself; she makes new friends and even has the attention of the most popular guy in school – Levi. Everything feels normal again… or does it?

Not long after her arrival, weird dreams of an alluring boy whom she’s never met surface during the night, and the eerie, shadowy trees encircling their school seem to call to her. As these disturbing, yet enticing developments intensify, other bizarre occurrences happen – students and staff turn up missing, and mystery visitors leave gifts while she sleeps. With all of these other things fighting for her attention, a desperate Levi has to fight even harder to keep her interest. But with the dreams of the attractive boy slowly captivating her heart, Kat has to make a choice – will she settle for ‘great’ Levi, or will she search for her elusive dream visitor, possibly stumbling across ‘amazing’?

From the author of the Alyx Rayer Chronicles, comes a refreshingly different Young Adult series with plenty of love, suspense, and a new take on the Paranormal.

Recommended for readers 16 and up due to mature content.

My Rambles

The synopsis above really does a great job of setting up Captivate Me so I'll not rehash too much.

I've read a lot of YA~NA paranormal books. A lot. So many, that at times I feel like I am getting a little jaded. Just when I feel like I am done with the genre for a while, a book like Captivate Me comes along and manages to pull me back in. This book had my "Spidy Senses" tingling on multiple levels.

Things happen pretty fast in this story. Kat make new friends and attracts the attention of one of the cutest guys Midland Pines really quickly. Like two weeks quickly. The alluring boy appears and things seem to get predictably triangely. Uh-oh.

I held my breath.

Don't worry. When the bizarre occurrences start happening, the "refreshingly different" from the synopsis above really kicks in. Kat's character doesn't wallow in YA cliches: “I didn’t want to be stuck in some silly love triangle… that wasn’t an option. Or fair to anyone.” While Kat makes some decisions that made me shake my head in frustration, I appreciated that she was mature enough to question herself along the way. Kat is a believable teenager - with normal and supernatural problems. She's kind, adventurous, and open-minded - which goes a long way when you attend a school for the Gifted.

I exhaled in relief.

Captivate Me is a fast-paced book with a number of interesting plot twists and turns. I kept rolling the pages after my allotted reading time was up. (I read a PDF review copy in one sitting). I think that it has appeal across genres. It's a good mix of romance, paranormal, and suspense.

IRIS (#1.5) by S.J. Pierce
Publication Date: September 1, 2014
Genres: Paranormal Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis

***This book is meant to be read after Captivate Me***

Set before the events in Book One of the Captivated Series, "Iris" explores the depths of family bonds, new bonds, and the lengths a person would go to save the life of a dying sibling. In this novella, get to know Iris and her two sisters more intimately, as well as Gabriel, the first angel-human hybrid who agrees to live under her protection.

Recommended for readers 16 and up due to mature content.

Purchase Iris at Amazon.

Check out the Captivated Series on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/series/124381-captivated

My Rambles

Again the novella's synopsis above really does a great job of setting up Iris so I'll try not rehash too much or give away too much of Captivate Me. The novella provides additional information on pre-story events revealed in Captivate Me. I must say that S.J. Pierce certainly has a way with prologues. Both Captivate prologues are well-crafted attention getters.

*taps finger while considering how much to not say - LOL!*

Iris is one of the key characters involved in some of the bizarre occurrences that happen in and around Midland Pines, School for the Gifted in Captivate Me. Let's just say that she has special skills.

Have you ever wondered how a supporting character arrived at a particular place in her life or developed a certain attitude? Pierce casts additional light on Iris' character with this novella. While it didn't make me change my overall opinion of Iris, I did find it an interesting perspective. I enjoyed getting more reading time with Kai (Iris' group member+), Rose and Lilliana (Iris' sisters) and Gabriel (the alluring boy).

I normally don't read .5 stories in a series, unless the first book published in the series starts with 0.5. I am going to start reading more series.5 novellas now. I might be missing out on some good things.

I've enjoyed the Captivate series so far and look forward to reading the next book. It's definitely best to  read Iris after Captivate Me. I am going to pick up copies of the Alyx Rayer Chronicles.

Purchase:

MY RAMBLES

Whew. Where Life Takes You is a doozy. I am talking drama. High drama. Low drama. And everything in between. After a getting a few chapters into the book, I just couldn't look away...

You get the sense that Becca Trent has really been through some hard times from the very beginning of the book. She is in therapy and a chance encounter with someone from her past sends her spiraling. Becca's early life took her to some pretty dark places. Growing up she had to deal with an especially cruel mother and step-sister. Then a family tragedy strikes leaving her stripped of what little joy she had. It's kind of like a first person version of Cinderella - on steroids.

Burgoa's storyline touches on a number of serious issues with a deft hand. At it's heart, the book is a story about someone trying to move on from a very tragic past. However, before she can truly heal, Becca has to face her demons. That is not an easy feat as they are pretty awful. Luckily Becca doesn't have to do it alone. She has her best friend, Dan, to support her in ways that her family could not or would not. His love and support are a light in all that darkness.

Dan is also broken in ways of his own. Although Becca tries to view Dan with brother-like goggles, his Alpha feelings run much deeper than that. But how do you reveal your feelings to someone who is already dealing with so much? This book ain't for the faint of heart. It's not your average romance. Bonus cool points for that.

Quite honestly, this book stressed me out. I went from sympathetic page clicking to outraged Kindle shaking. I was not altogether pleased with the cliffhanger ending, but that was a good thing. It means that I was emotionally invested in the characters enough to actually care about what happened to them. You know, that is not always a guarantee.

Readers love books that stir their emotions. This book does just that. I look forward to reading the next installment. I am pulling for Becca and Dan's happily-ever-after.

NOTE: I will be reading Next To You this weekend during the Bout of Books 11 read-a-thon. I received a free copy of both of the Life series books in exchange for an honest review.

An American Girl in Italy by Aubrie Dionne: Book Review + Giveaway

Kinky Vanilla Romance is pleased to share An American Girl in Italy by Aubrie Dionne.

An American Girl in Italy by Aubrie Dionne

182 pages

An Italian paradise is the last thing she wants… but the one thing she needs!

Surely any girl would kill for the chance to tour Italy’s most famous cities for the summer? To experience the warmth of the Tuscan sun, the culinary delights of the pizzerias and caffés and to stroll along the cobbled streets of the City of Love itself… Any girl apart from ambitious oboist Carly Davis that is! For her, the Easthampton Civic Symphony’s latest European tour is one massive inconvenience. She can’t even put her smartphone down long enough to snap a picture of the Coliseum. Only, there’s one Italian attraction that Carly hadn’t quite expected to be a part of the tourist route…

Tour guide Michelangelo is as dark and delicious as Carly’s morning espresso. And when she needs a few lessons in the language of love to land her an important gig, he’s a more than capable tutor.

But with her promising career back in Boston, can Carly really afford to lose her heart in Italy?

My Rambles:

An American Girl in Italy is a delightfully sweet romance that will make you want to start planning a trip to Italy ASAP.

Carly is a talented classically-trained musician who is very career-minded. She is all about business when she arrives in Italy with the Easthampton Civic Symphony on a tour. She is packing an oboe and a bad attitude. If Michaelangelo's name doesn't make you swoon, his bio will. He's an Italian tour guide and vineyard owner who is dedicated to his family and business. He felt almost too good to be true.

I love stories where the relationship starts off rocky. I enjoyed watching Carly and Michaelangelo's attraction grow as they opened their hearts and minds to the possibility of romance. It happens kinda quickly, but makes sense with the story (it is a two-week tour). Aubrie Dionne does a great job of setting the scenes in Italy. I especially liked the secondary characters in the story. They were fleshed out and really added to the book (unlike some other books that I have read recently - SMH).

An American Girl in Italy is well-paced and easy to read. I would describe the book as a light romance or women's fiction with a touch of romance. I think that it would be a good weekend read or beach read for fans of sweet romance and fans of Italy.

My recommendation? Pack your virtual bags and take a trip to Italy by reading the book.

My Rambles

"Oh what a tangled web we weave, When first we practice to deceive." - Sir Walter Scott

This is the quote that kept running through my head as I read Hidden Intentions.

The book opens with Clara and William returning home for the summer. During the plane ride, Clara discovers a jewelry box that appears to be from a high-end jewelry story. [She doesn't open it.] Although she is surprised and somewhat pleased, the idea that William might propose marriage soon sends Clara into a fit of worry. There are two major secrets hanging over what could and should be a happy occasion.

[no serious plot spoilers ahead]

Secret One
In spite of the fact they have been together almost a decade (including the time they spent together when he was in high school), William's parents don't know about their relationship. William's well-meaning but overbearing parents have already planned his future's course and it doesn't include distractions like a serious relationship.

Secret Two
Clara has dark and deadly identity that she has been keeping hidden from William. Her ties with William's family's past threaten to expose her secrets. Clara feels guilty about hiding her identity from her love, but is terrified that the truth will drive him away.

Sometimes the act of keeping secrets is more of an issue than the secrets themselves.

Hidden Intentions is really fast-paced and easy to read. Clara and William make a sweet and relatable couple. I enjoyed watching their relationship strengthen and William grow as they dealt with challenges. While there were a few story points that I thought didn't do much to advance the story, I enjoyed the book overall. I have read quite a few new adult novels this year. In real life transitioning (from young adulthood to adulthood), parents are often a major influence in a person's life. Last month, I talked with a friend about how parental influence (good or bad) has been noticeably absent in the new adult books that I've read recently. [I find that really annoying in YA books - by the way.] This book gets extra love for weaving this point into the story in a believable way.

I think that Hidden Intentions would be a good weekend read or beach read for people who enjoy paranormal or paranormal romance stories. It can be read as a standalone. You can check out two excerpts from Hidden Intentions on Stacy's website.

The Sweet Spot by Stephanie Evanovich

Released in Print, July 8th, 2014

Last summer readers were captivated by Stephanie Evanovich’s highly-anticipated New York Times bestselling debut novel, Big Girl Panties. This summer, Evanovich is back with THE SWEET SPOT, the sizzling story of two of readers’ favorite characters from Big Girl Panties: Chase Walker, the hunky professional baseball player, and his beautiful, curvy, and exceptionally sassy wife Amanda.

Amanda is a successful, levelheaded woman who built her restaurant from scratch. She’s certainly not looking for a prince charming to sweep her off her feet. So when Chase, baseball’s golden boy, begins to pursue her, she barely gives him the time of day. Her heart-shaped face and big blue eyes stop him dead in his tracks and her lush, plus-size curves don’t hurt either. And while Amanda’s used to celebrities and politicians dining at the Cold Creek Grille, she just can’t stop staring at Chase—he’s hotness personified.

At heart, Chase is a monogamist who likes strong women, despite his playboy image. Amanda is exactly the type he’s been looking to settle down with, but she won’t say yes easily. From daily visits to the restaurant to extravagant flower arrangements, Chase will stop at nothing to persuade her to go out with him—and he finally succeeds!

For Amanda their romance is all too good to be true, and something has got to give. Can Chase really be this perfect? And then she discovers that squeaky-clean Chase Walker has a spicy little kink. While readers of Big Girl Panties will remember it quite well, Chase’s fans have no idea that off the field, he likes to indulge in a little passionate spanking from time to time.

To her surprise, Amanda discovers a naughty side she never knew she had. But then, thanks to a tabloid, their secret comes to light and becomes the nation’s favorite water-cooler gossip. Will Amanda give up a little bit of her single-girl freedom for true love with a twist? Or will the pressure of Chase’s stardom spell doom for this sexy couple?

THE SWEET SPOT is an incredibly sexy and charming story filled with wit, fun, and extra-spicy romance. This is the perfect follow-up to Big Girl Panties and undoubtedly a great choice for summer reading.

My Rambles

THE SWEET SPOT is a full-sized prequel to Stephanie Evanovich's Big Girl Panties. It can be read as a standalone. Although, I have yet to read Big Girl Panties (it's on my TBR list), I had no problems jumping in and following the story.

At its heart, this story is about what happens when your Mr. Rights finally arrives and he not the way you imagined. How far would you be willing to go to hold on to what feels like true love?

Well of course, the first thing that caught my eye about THE SWEET SPOT was the cover. I think that I assumed too much about the sweetness angle based on the cover. Don't get me wrong. It's there. The way that Chase wooed Amanda had me grinning. The boy was good. Really good.

What I couldn't picture from the cover was Chase's spicy little kink - spanking. It took Amanda by surprise too. LOL! Going from great "vanilla sex" (Chase's term) to "Surprise! I'd like to have great vanilla sex with spanking sprinkles, please," would be hard for a lot of people to accept. Amanda approaches it with curiosity and humor. However, the road to romance was not without its bumps.

Evanovich had me pleasantly worried for a while. I was really pulling for their happily-ever-after. I had to keep reminding myself that Chase and Amanda are married in Big Girl Panties and this is a romance novel - so of course it would eventually work out. Whew!

In spite of the blurb, I didn't see this story's arc unfolding in quite the way it did. And that is a good thing. I'd recommend this book to readers who are fans of sports, spanking, or contemporary romances.

NOTES: This is not a BDSM book. The sex is hot, but won't burn your eyes.

A big-city, high-powered advertising executive and a small-town firefighter learn that no matter where you started or what you’ve lost, if you open your heart, you can find joy and love again. WILD IRIS RIDGE is the latest book in USA TODAY bestselling author RaeAnne Thayne’s charming Hope’s Crossing series.

Lucy Drake and Brendan Caine have only one thing in common. And it's likely to tear them apart. Because it was Brendan's late wife, Jessie—and Lucy's best friend—who'd brought them together in the first place. And since Jesse's passing, Brendan's been distracted by his two little ones… and the memory of an explosive kiss with Lucy years before his marriage. Still, he'll steer clear of her. She's always been trouble with a capital T.

Lucy couldn't wait to shed her small-town roots for the big city. But now that she's back in Hope's Crossing to take care of the Queen Anne home her late aunt has left her, she figures seeing Brendan Caine again is no big deal. After all, she'd managed to resist the handsome fire chief once before, but clearly the embers of their attraction are still smoldering…

My Rambles

Wild Iris Ridge by RaeAnne Thayne is book is the seventh and final installment of the Hope's Crossing series. This is the first book that I have read by RaeAnne Thayne. I was able to follow the storyline easily despite not having read books one through six.

I was initially drawn to this book by it's cover. Is it lovely?  I would love to have a reading chair inside of that flower garden. And Thayne's writing style is as lovely as the cover. I planned to read Wild Iris Ridge over a week's time, but got so engrossed that I read it over a weekend. This story contains frenemies, young children, wayward siblings, and puppies - all in need of saving to some degree. I got caught up in pulling for their happily-ever-afters.

I really enjoyed the build up of the romance between Lucy and Brendan. Their dialogue was smart, funny, and relatable. Although there are no graphic sex scenes (or sex scenes at all for that matter), their sexual chemistry was palpable. Frenemies to lovers is hard to pull off, but Thayne does it successfully with tenderness and humor.

Readers love books that stir their emotions. This book does just that.

When I finished Wild Iris Ridge, all I could do was sigh. My to-be-read list instantly expanded by seven books. I enjoyed reading about the Caine family and the townspeople of Hope's Crossing so much that I am going to read the previous books in the series. I am also looking forward to the release of Snow Angel Cove (book one in Thayne' new Haven Point series) this fall.

If you are a fan of romances involving small towns, widowers, or kids, then Wild Iris Ridge is a sweet romance that you won't want to miss. It is a story about surviving tragedy and seizing second chances.

So what are you waiting for? Enter to win a book from the Hope’s Crossing series right now!

Synopsis

“Who am I? For all intents and purposes, I am the nice guy; the loyal brother and decent citizen. I am quiet and non-confrontational. I am the brother nobody worries about and can always depend upon. To my family, I am the good one. However, that’s only what they see on the outside.” ~ Jeremy Evans

Outwardly, Jeremy Evans is a typical guy, the calmest of the Evans brothers. He’s obsessed with cars, enjoys the company of beautiful women, and is devoted to his family. Inwardly, however, Jeremy is a ticking time bomb. Torn between what’s right versus what’s wrong. When the attempted rape on Darcie occurs, Jeremy finally loses the battle within himself. The pure hatred for Sulfur Heights consumes him and escape is all he thinks about.

One year later, he is secretly engrossed by the drug-infested underworld. Jeremy’s double life leads him on dark and sinister paths of drugs, violence, and rage. The Evans family is destroyed after Presley’s murder and consequently, Jeremy’s arrest. He’s sent to prison where he’s forced to survive with the mistakes he’s made on his conscience. However, only one thought lingers. It consumes the years he spends locked in a cell. Retribution.

Cami Ryker used to have a picture perfect life. She was loved by her family and happy with her life until her brother’s sudden death tore her family apart. Cami is forced to care for her ailing mother and assume the responsibilities of a normal adult. However, when the bills are paid and her mother is tucked away for the night, Cami likes to cloud her mind in order to escape her daily struggles. Late one night, a stranger trolling the streets rescues her in a dark alley. The mysterious stranger will become one of the most important people in her life until the day he’s sent to prison.

Four years later, Jeremy is released and seeking redemption for his mistakes, but the betrayal is still thriving amongst the Evans family. Will Jeremy finally find the solace within to gain the forgiveness from his family that he desperately craves? And is it possible for Jeremy to save those he loves and exonerate himself in the process?

  Excerpt

“Really?” Jake screams and steps closer. “You’re not sorry for getting Presley killed? All of that had to do with you. You know that, right?”

“I was trying to protect her!” My belly is touching Jake’s and we are going to blow up on one another. I can sense it.

“How were you protecting her? She’s fucking dead, Jeremy! Take some goddamn responsibility for what you’ve done!” Jake pushes on my chest, but I don’t waver.

I stand my ground and wait for him to hit me. Once he hits me, then my switch will be fully turned over. The beast is pacing like a rabid animal inside of me. He’s screaming and clawing, trying to get out of me, but I can’t allow that to happen. Jake will be dead if it does. The red is seeping into my line of sight, and soon, it will consume me. Soon, there will be no stopping it. I need to assess what’s really happening right now. I am on the verge of killing my brother, my twin. I will never be able to live with myself if I allow that.

I take a step back and expel deep gasps of air. I turn my back and thread my fingers behind my head. I need to walk. I have to get as far as I can away from this situation before it moves from bad to worse. I slowly walk away from Jake, hoping he doesn’t pursue. Yet the more I move away, the more my inner beast beckons me to attack. I am fighting to keep him inside, but it’s impossible when I’ve been that horrible person for so long.

My skin is lit on fire, and I feel like I’m boiling from the inside. Sweat is generating and makes my skin slick. I grab ahold of the back of my shirt and rip it over my head. My bleeding arm is aching, but I ignore it. I toss my shirt to the ground and walk to the garage. I stalk back and forth, trying to keep myself from losing it when suddenly the anger is too much to bear. I pull my fist back and slam it into the wall. My knuckles crack loudly. Instant pain shoots through my hand and up my arm.
I want to feel the pain, though. I need to feel the pain. I deserve to feel pain. I torture myself some more and start laying blow after blow into the wood. I smash my fist into the unforgiving building until I cannot stand another second of it. Then, I release a loud, guttural scream. It’s a scream in anger and agony.

When I turn to face my brother, I’m looking at two of them. Reggie is standing beside Jake, arms crossed and indifferent. Jake, on the other hand, is staring at me in disbelief. He is studying me and trying to see if I’m the brother he used to know. However, the look in his eyes is telling me I’m a stranger. They’ve never seen this side of me before, and it’s the part of me I’ve been living for years. I’m familiar with and comfortable in this mind’s state.

My breathing is labored and the pain in my arm is growing to great heights. I can no longer stand the intensity as it burns my entire arm. I fall to my knees and hold my wounded hand against my sweaty chest.

As Reggie looks to me, his indifference finally fading, he sees me for the brother he once loved and falls to my side. I hold my head up and connect my eyes to his. They are filled with worry and concern. I’ve done an amazing job destroying my family, but the little part of me that’s left hopes my family can see I really do want to be with them. It will just take me time to shed my past.

“What happened to the brother I used to know?” Reggie’s voice is quiet and scared. Not since Darcie’s situation with Robert have I ever seen Reggie this frightened.

I glance down at the ground and try to think of what happened to his brother. I rack my brain, digging in the depths of my memory to find out what the hell happened to him—to me. Nothing comes to mind other than my execution. The Jeremy Evans they knew and once loved is dead.
I look back to Reggie and answer as honestly as I can. “He died a long time ago.”

Author Interview

What about your characters surprised you while writing Redeemed Love?

I was very surprised the way Jeremy’s character morphed into an angry, malicious man. I always knew he was darker, but it really took me by surprise how dark he truly was. It was amazing experiencing it, and then helping him slowly dissolve the hate.

What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?

Oh, man. This is such a hard question. But, if I have to choose one it would be the end of part one. He has accepted his fate, the punishment for the life he’s lead thus far. It’s a powerful part when he has to tell Cami goodbye and finally own up to his crimes with his family. The long walk to the police cruiser he transforms himself into the only person who will keep him alive while he’s in prison—the beast.

What scene was the hardest to write? Why?

The ending was the big climax of the entire series and I wanted it to be just right. Drake finally gets to see his brother face to face and the emotions are high, I submerged myself even more into the final chapters. I was nervous writing it, because I knew it would be filled with every single emotion humanly possible.

Redeemed Love is the fifth book in the Sulfur Heights series. Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?

I will write where the story takes me. I rarely outline and when I do it’s only to organize my thoughts. It’s uncommon if I follow it completely. So I am very proud with how the story turned out. On a side note, I wanted to write not only Jeremy and Cami’s future several years down the road, but I wanted to do it for all of the main characters. Plus, my fans are craving the epilogue for the Evans Family. And that’s how Everlasting Love came to be. However, I’ve been toying with the idea of writing about the villains of Sulfur Heights. Their angry and tragic stories fascinate me.

Who would you cast in the roles of Jeremy Evans and Cami Ryker, if your book were to be optioned for a movie?

I am never any good at this because I don’t really know popular actors. When I was writing I saw a young, buff Tom Hardy sans tattoos for Jeremy Evans and for Cami, a young Roselyn Sanchez.

Do you have an ideal reader in mind when you write? If so, please describe that reader.

I don’t really have a particular type of reader in mind when I write. I have a variety of readers and most of them enjoy the unexpected stories I write. As long as the reader can handle the darker side of love and life then I believe my stories are for them. Some readers preferred not to finish my series because it’s not filled with sunshine and rainbows, and you know what…that’s okay with me. As long as the reader understands I will probably not be the fluffy HEA type of writer.

What’s your biggest challenge as a writer?

Time, is always a huge struggle of mine. I work a full time job and have a very busy family life, so I write in my spare time, which is from 3AM to 6AM. And I do this because I love writing so much and I want this to be a full time career for me someday. However, it's a grueling schedule and keeps me very busy.

How did you overcome it, or how are you working to overcome it?

After three years of maintaining this schedule, I finally took a break. I gave myself time to recharge my battery, so to speak, and now I’m ready to rock again.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

After a fan read Scarred Love, she reached out to me and thanked me for writing such a deeply emotional survival story. She related to the subject matter and experienced many of the same types of abuse from her own father. I was very sadden, yet overwhelmed with her bravery to be a survivor and not a victim. Her words touched me deeply, and I will never forget it.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?

I wrote my first book in secret. There were only a few people who knew I was writing it. When I hit published, I finally told my friends and family I wrote a book and where to buy it. Their reaction was awesome.

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you, in any way, either growing up or as an adult?

I love so many authors and my favorites change as often as time, but I cannot list them all. However, I will always reread the classics, such as, Gone with the Wind and To Kill a Mockingbird.

What project are you working on now?

Last Call—romantic comedy, yet will pull on your heart strings

Everlasting Love—the final installment of the Sulfur Heights Series

Forbidden From You, Forbidden From Me—romance/suspense

Believing In Brave—YA novella

My Rambles

Summer is a great time to start a new book series. With longer warmers days on hand, I love to binge read an entire series. My first binge of the summer is the Sulfur Heights series by M.S. Brannon. It is a five-book new adult contemporary romance series surrounding the Evans brothers, a tight-knit but troubled family.

The synopsis of Redeemed Love above really gives you a good summary without revealing too much so I'll won't add much to it.

<sigh>

Can I just say that I read Redeemed Love like I was watching a horror movie? You know, you start with your hands covering your eyes. Curiosity gets the best of you and you peek through the gaps in your fingers. Then you just can't look away...

The book's main character, Jeremy Evans, silently lurked through the other books in the series. You never knew quite what to make of him. He was the consummate man of mystery. SMH. You should always beware of the quiet ones.

Redeemed Love is broken into two sections.

Part One: The Underworld drops you into the belly of the beast, so to speak. Jeremy is involved with the seedy underworld of drugs and violence - in an attempt to make a lot of money fast so that he can move his family out of Sulfur Heights toward a better life. Brannon really lowers the boom.

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Part Two: Aftermath is about Jeremy's road back from Hell. It is bumpy and heart-breaking. But there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is not a train. It's love for Cami. It's love for his family.

Redeemed Love is a story about the ties that bind - romantic and familial. It's a dark romance filled with secrets. While it can be read as a standalone book, I highly recommend that you start at the beginning of the series. It is a gritty complex family saga. While it ain't all rainbows and sunshine, I think that you'll really enjoy Sulfur Heights.

I am looking forward to the upcoming release of Everlasting Love, the final installment of the series. I have hosted giveaways for Scarred Love (#1),  Tragic Love (#2), Blind Love (#3) here on the blog this summer. You can check out the links to get a synopsis of each one.

NOTE: I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
