Love on the Run by Dean C. Moore

Husband and wife thieves are on a mission. Just not the same one. He’s out to pay for her cancer therapy–at any costs. She’s out to humanize him, and make him less of a self-absorbed jerk.

The fast-talking, fast-acting, adrenaline seeking duo pick up a few on-again off-again sidekicks along their way, despite staunch protests from Zinio. But with all they’re up against–not the least of which being one smart, hound-dog of a lady detective–the question is: Can love conquer all?

“The story is smart and funny.” R. D. Hale, Sky City: The Rise of an Orphan

“For the booklover that doesn’t like having his or her time wasted.” Jack Heath, Remote Control

“This would make a brilliant movie or TV series.” Demelza Carlton, Ocean’s Gift

“Reminded me of The Thomas Crown Affair, down to the whip-cracking humor, the snazzy plot turns, and the character dynamics between the leads and the hotshot female detective on their tales.” Rhys Jones, The Whispering Void

“Only if you want an action packed read with fully developed and interesting characters.” Victor Longshanks, One Big Problem

EXCERPT

“Any big ideas, bright guy?” Delaney said, holding the broken rearview mirror in her hand to check out what was going on overhead, to avoid giving those inside the chase helicopter the satisfaction of her looking up.

“Just drive straight into the ocean.”

“Please tell me you’re joking.”

“Why would I be joking at a time like this?”

“Okay, fine, I’m sorry for picking on you so much. I know you’re doing the best you know how. There, I said it. You happy?”

“I’m not depressed, Delaney. I just need you to drive into the ocean.”

“A psychotic break? Is that it? You picked now for a psychotic break? Why not all those times I chewed off your male appendage, metaphorically speaking—not to make myself out as a man-eating black widow?”

“You dragged along the equipment I asked you to, right?”

“Yeah.”

“So, you get it now?”

“Yeah, duh. God, that just makes so much more sense in context.”

***

Kerry looked up from the photos of the couple to the big screen again. Her jaw dropped as she watched Delaney drive the convertible Thunderbird straight into the ocean. They made no attempt to get out of the vehicle; they let the sea swallow them up along with the car.

“Are we finally rid of them?” Carter said.

Kerry started chuckling slowly. The guffawing grew into a geyser of loud laughter, which finally subsided. “No, Carter, not yet.” She glanced back up at the screen. “God, that’s clever.”

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

What came first for LOVE ON THE RUN, the characters or the story itself?

Neither. Scenes started popping into my head involving stylish, high profile bank and casino heists. From these I started to get a sense of my characters. So the characters definitely preceded the story, but they did not come first. I had to get a sense of Zinio and Delaney through their actions, their dialogue, their interactions with one another and the world around them, and of course through their personal chemistry. The more the picture of the two of them came into focus, the more the rest of the story followed; the latter you could say arises naturally from the conflicts between Zinio and Delaney and their inner and outer demons.

What about your characters surprised you while writing?

Despite all their chemistry, wit, and charm, Zinio and Delaney can’t maintain the sizzle on their relationship without a focus on the outside world every bit as great as their focus on one another. They seem to need to champion the downtrodden; they need their social causes and a sense of working for the greater good to keep from self-destructing. As intense as their love is for one another, if they kept that love bottled up without it bleeding into the rest of the human condition they would simply implode. As to why that is, I leave that for the reader to discover. It’s a subject I meditate on to this day.

What answers I’ve come up with are partial at best.

Is it because they are larger than life, and their higher power refuses to have them take themselves off the gaming table of life when there are so many people hurting simply to create an island oasis about themselves, oblivious to the desert that surrounds, when that much psychic energy could be put to more important ends? Or is it that only by balancing romantic love with brotherly love do they become larger than life?

As characters that are so spontaneous and in the moment and who live life more fully than the rest of us, do they need to leave some trace of themselves that’s more permanent for fear there might otherwise be no record of their ability to raise life to the level of art?

Just what drives them exactly?

Do they feel like they have to do penance for the parts of themselves they can’t forgive, the actions, thoughts, and deeds they’d just as soon forget?

Have they found a formula that allows them to integrate the dark and light sides of their nature worth emulating by all of us, or have they instead found a shorter and quicker path to ruin?

Am I even asking the right questions in attempting to probe into what drives them? I guess in the final analysis it’s for the reader to decide.

What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?

The first bank robbery that Zinio and Delaney go on, which was initially the hook chapter, but is now chapter two. In the middle of the heist of the century they’re also having the marital spat of the century. I had to take frequent breaks from writing the sequence because my eyes were welling up from laughing so hard I could no longer see the page. Of course, my sense of humor might be different than yours and I might be a lot funnier in my own mind. Feel free to reassure me neither of those is the case by using my “contact me” form on my website and requesting to get on the email list to find out the instant the sequel is available.

The first two chapters set the tone of the story and put one in mind of the movie, The Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan. Chapter one introduces the female FBI profiler that will be hounding our heroes throughout the story. But it’s in chapter two that we find out why they’re worth her while and ours. In short order, Zinio and Delaney demonstrate what is actually more stimulating about the two of them than downhill skiing; why the latter is actually that much less of an adrenaline rush.

What scene was the hardest to write? Why?

There are a few contenders for this one. But getting out of the bed on the side I did this morning, my choice is for the prison scene, when they’re thrown behind bars and the key locking the door is happily destroyed (well, proverbially speaking anyway). It is painful to see these two colorful, Scarlet Macaw personalities encaged, as all birds should be set free to do what they do, take to the air. And the thought that they can no longer be what they’re meant to be is gut wrenching enough. Add to that the fact that Delaney’s cancer is flaring up and each day she’s trapped in that cell she’s one step closer to death’s door. They say these scenes are hardest for actors to act, but I can assure you, they’re no easier for writers to write. Intense emotions of any kind are never easy to render on paper or on screen, but they’re an essential part of good storytelling.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?

George Clooney and Julia Roberts definitely came to mind for the leads, Zinio and Delaney, as did Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The latter couple paired up for Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which has some of the flavor of Love on the Run. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock would also make the shortlist, I would think, considering their pairing in The Proposal. Whoever’s chosen, they better start their jaw exercises from now, because keeping up with the whip-cracking humor throughout this novel and the fast-paced banter in general is not a job for out-of-shape tongues and inelastic jaw bones.

They say comedy is one of the hardest genres to write in because what strikes one person as hilarious might not even get a rise out of someone else. While I don’t think writing comedy-dramas like Love on the Run is any easier, the hats off, in my opinion, definitely goes to the actors, as the precise timing required to get the scenes to play necessitates that only A-list actors need apply. What’s more, there’s a hefty dose of romance in Love on the Run; in my experience, that kind of screen chemistry can’t exactly be faked either. The last couple that had as much on-screen-chemistry as Zinio and Delaney have on the page was Dick Powell and Myrna Loy of The Thin Man series.

What character from LOVE ON THE RUN is most like you?

Zinio and Delaney are both exaggerations of a couple facets of my personality. In real life I’m a fairly decent strategist, but only in my wildest dreams am I the master schemer that Zinio is. And like Delaney, I have numerous human rights causes I champion, but I tend to do so through my writing, whereas Delaney puts herself right on the front lines, the way the Occupy Movement protestors do every day. I guess that by living through Zinio’s and Delaney’s escapades in Love on the Run, I’m conditioning myself to take the next step in being all that I can be.

There are a couple senior citizen couples in Love on the Run that are among the on-again, off-again sidekicks accompanying Zinio and Delaney on their journey to evade the FBI long enough to do some social good. I would hope when I’m the ripe old age of these septuagenarians that I can deal with getting old with the same sense of heroism and self-deprecating humor. You only have to spend five minutes with them to know that any challenges faced even by superheroes in Marvel comics pale by comparison. So I guess you could say that Zinio and Delaney’s sidekicks, too, are idealizations of me, and the kind of person I’d like to grow into.

As to the young Marty, if there is such a thing as reincarnation, he’s me in my next life. I’ll leave you to read the book to figure out why.

What’s your biggest challenge as a writer? How did you overcome it, or how are you working to overcome it?

I would say my biggest challenge as a writer is balancing quality with quantity. When you’re not part of the top one percent of writers who get all the huge marketing and promotional campaigns, then you pretty much have to sell more books to eke out even a subsistence living. When you think of what they pay Steven King, does he even ever have to write a second book? But do the math at our end of the spectrum, and at least a couple books a year are probably required just to keep us well stocked on canned beans and rice. So then, how do you be more prolific without sacrificing quality?

There is no one easy answer to that. I have more tools in my carpenter’s tool box to that end than a seasoned journeyman. For one, I’ve been writing consistently for over a decade, and as with anything, practice makes perfect, and the more you do something, the faster and better you get at it. I also type a 120 words per minute, which helps me to maintain a prodigious output without getting bogged down in the simple act of re-typing that comes with editing. Of course, technology has played its part as well. Computers and software are godsends to a level of productivity that would have been unimaginable in the days of typewriters, paper, and ink.

But I have many other tricks up my sleeve. I’ve trained myself over the years to enter a meditative state at will, what peak performance athletes refer to as “the zone.” This all but eliminates writers block and keeps my output humming along at top speed while actually increasing the quality, as we can only do our best work from within the zone.

I’ll share just one more trick with you—I don’t want to give away too much, pending the book, entitled, “How I overcame Writer’s Block to go on to Become One of the Most Prolific Writers in the World”—and that’s my tendency to edit several books in parallel. Since you need cold, detached eyes to look at a draft you just finished, and that usually requires setting it down for a couple of weeks or more before coming back to it, moving on to editing another story in the meantime all but eliminates any downtime. The only downfall of this system, as I’ve bemoaned elsewhere on some of my earlier guest posts, is that several titles come to fruition at once instead of one at a time. Harvesting the fruit of the vine in this manner might be great for farmers but is a nightmare for undiscovered indie authors. It’s hard enough to get one book recognized, let alone several at once. As soon as I figure out the solution to this Catch-22, I’ll let you know. Here’s hoping these virtual book tours are part of the answer of how to rescue myself from obscurity!

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

My most rewarding experience since being published is being published. I predate the internet revolution and the renaissance happening in the arts. In my day, if you weren’t lucky enough to be part of the top one percent of writers, which is more political and less based on merit than you would imagine, you pretty much saw your manuscripts stacking up in the closet without any hope of an outlet. At least painters can make a living if they just have one fan willing to buy their one painting and they’re willing to pay enough. With novels you need to be just a little more popular than that. So the self-empowerment, indie-author tools were a revelation. These days I’m proud to be a child of the renaissance movement in the arts, which is helping to wrest power and control from the gatekeepers who want to limit what people have to read based on their own hidden agendas. I can’t imagine that I could ever be tempted by mainstream publishing in lieu of the added creativity and quality standards that accompany putting art first and politics second, if not scratching the latter off the list altogether.

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title of the book should be? Why?

Full Moon Rising. “Full Moon” was my nickname in college. And it wasn’t always used fondly. I have a certain intensity that never waxes or wanes that makes me great fun in small doses, but probably more than most people can handle for longer periods. I’d like to think aging has mellowed me, but that’s hardly for me to decide. When you consider my formula for maintaining prolificness as a writer (mentioned above), that might be one clue that I haven’t mellowed all that much. Back in my IBM-correcting-Selectric typewriter days (for those who can remember back that far), when I also lived communally in Berkeley, CA, people would pass the closed door on my bedroom, hear the typewriter, and duck. They thought they were under machine gun fire.

Living communally, on the other hand, that did mellow me quite a bit. I miss those days. I’m hoping to turn the country acreage I’m currently on into an artist sanctuary for writers someday. As it would not only help me to get out of my head to interact with people more, but nature itself is very calming and grounding. So with some concerted “social engineering,” who knows, the moon may actually begin to wax and wane finally.

Characters often find themselves in situations they aren't sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

Funny you should ask. The situation I’m in now is one of rescuing myself as an indie author from obscurity. Simply getting the word out that my novels are out there and something people might well enjoy, particularly if they’re into sci-fi, paranormal fantasy, and action-adventure, all with a healthy dose of dry wit and strong female leads, is no small feat. I hear that 400 books get published a day at last count. I can’t say I’ve mastered the art of getting heard above all that noise, but I’m definitely on the road to find out just how to do that. Moreover, as I believe I have a lot to offer, not just by way of delightful escapist fantasies, but with helping people to become the types of heroes and heroines they’ll find in my stories in real life. I’ve made a lifelong study of helping to procure that alchemy in myself and others, and now I slip that learning into the magic of storytelling with its ability to transform us all from an altered state far more readily than sitting in a lotus position and meditating for years on end.

When it comes to building a loyal fan base, I’ve come to accept that it might just take a little longer in my case for reasons that are under my control versus the reasons that aren’t (as cited above.) For starters, one of the things I enjoy about being an indie author is the freedom it allows me to follow my heart wherever it leads me, and if that’s into other genres that I’m not known for, so be it. Love on the Run would never have been written weren’t it for that tendency to stray. Asides from being one of my favorite projects, about the only thing it shares with the bulk of sci-fi and paranormal fantasy that I write is a thirst for action-adventure, smart banter, and a distinctive narrative voice that follows me most everywhere, which I’m told is a rare and precious gift. Sometimes I wonder if it’s more of a curse than a gift, as it seems enviable to me to be able to disguise one’s narrative voice from one project to another. But I guess those folks are actors first, and writers second, the kind of writer that would be great say doing episodes of a TV series actually piloted by someone else. Indeed, they make a whole lot of money, so, while I’ll take the praise and the free PR concerning the distinctive narrative voice, in my mind, I sometimes wish I were more of a chameleon in that respect. But for those who enjoy the comedy-drama tone that accompanies much of my writing, the good news is, if you don’t traditionally read in all the genres I write in, you should find yourself enjoying tagging along for the ride all the same.

The other arguably self-sabotaging thing I do is release several books close together instead of releasing one at a time and focusing on marketing that one for say six months straight. As discussed in my answer to one of the above questions, I release more than one title at a time because I write, edit, and polish more than one title at a time, and I do that as a way of minimizing downtime. It’s really not advisable to try and do another draft of something you’ve written until you can get some distance on it. Rather than be unproductive during that two week cooling off period, I will move on to editing another book. Again, this method is great for productivity without sacrificing quality, but when it comes to marketing, it makes an already prickly situation that much more pointed. So, do me a favor, if you sample one of my books and enjoy it, do read them all and help me to get the word out. Maybe that way you can help me to overcome my own nature as well as marketing realities that stymie the best of us.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I write sci-fi, fantasy, action-adventures and thrillers, or some combination thereof—usually with a strong vein of dark humor. Though, my works are dramas first; the humor is there to take the edge off as with the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Transformers, and Jurassic Park franchises.

I wrote screenplays for a while, and while enjoying them, I found them a bit confining. After a while you just need the extra page count to flesh out characters better and do additional world building, especially when considering doing anything epic in scope. I also took a run at future forecasting and trend tracking, being as I always had my head in the future, things like Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock. I also relished this, and can certainly see myself releasing a few titles accordingly in the nonfiction area. But since delving into novels, short and long, I’ve definitely found my home and my voice. For the first time I feel the restraints have been taken off of my imagination. I suppose all mediums have their limits, so I may end up doing a mix of things, but I suspect I will continue to spend most of my time with novels. Series add an additional dimension, allowing for even more depth and development both in the character and world building departments. But I remain at heart a divergent thinker, so, no surprise, I seem to have more series going than follow up installments at this point. That too may change over time; we’ll see. Until then, it may be best to just think of these books as one-offs if you’re fond of my writing style and some of the themes I work with.

My current catalog of twelve books represents a little over five years' worth of work. I'm currently averaging a couple books annually. Of my existing franchises with multiple installments, The Hundred Year Clone books can be read in any order, while the 5 books of Renaissance 2.0 must be read in sequence as they form part of a singular story arc (much as with A Game of Thrones.)

I live in the country where I breed bluebirds, which are endangered in these parts, as my small contribution to restoring nature's balance. When I'm not writing, or researching my next book, I may also be found socializing with friends, or working in my organic garden.

Prince Hafiz’s Only Vice by Susanna Carr

What a royal wants…

Prince Hafiz devotes his days to his people and his nights to indulging his desires with his stunning American mistress, Lacey Maxwell. But duty requires him to marry a "suitable" bride.

In her deepest secret fantasies, Lacey naively hopes to one day wear Hafiz's ring, until her dreams are shattered and he chooses someone else.

Faced with the reality of a passionless union, Hafiz realizes the years spent with Lacey have done nothing to slake his hunger for her. Instead he's determined to turn his only vice into a virtue for the sake of his country…and each other!

EXCERPT

"I will miss you, Hafiz," she said brokenly as her throat closed up. The tears she thought couldn’t happen beaded on her eyelashes.

Hafiz let out a shuddering breath. He swept his fingertip against the corner of her eye, taking her tears with him. The moisture clung to his knuckle, and he rubbed it into his skin with his thumb, silently sharing her agony.

The image took a chink out of her hard-earned resolve. Lacey wrapped her arms around her stomach before she crumbled altogether. "I had so many questions to ask you, and now I can't remember what they were." All except for one that danced on her tongue. "Did you ever love me?"

Silence throbbed in the air.

Lacey blinked at the question that had tumbled from her mouth. Of all the things to ask, her mind screamed.

Hafiz went unnaturally still.

"I don't know why I asked." She shrugged as her pain intensified. "Please, don't answer that."

The words were ripped from deep within her. She desperately wanted to know the answer. She never questioned it before, but she had been living in a fantasy.

Lacey had always felt Hafiz loved her. It was in his touch, in his eyes, and in his smile. But he never said the words, even when she chanted her declaration of love in the height of ecstasy.

It was too late to find out. If he didn't love her, she would never recover. If he did love her, then she would never let go. Even if he was married, even if he kept her hidden. And she couldn't let that happen.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Prince Hafiz's Only Vice is the eighth book in the Royal and Ruthless series. What is the series about?

The Royal and Ruthless series is not connected with characters or setting. The only thing these books have in common is that the hero is a prince who much choose between duty and love.

How much of a story did you have in mind before you started writing Prince Hafiz's Only Vice?

I knew I wanted to write a forbidden romance and that it was going to be set in a desert kingdom. I had an outline and I knew how I wanted it to end, but there was no guarantee that was going to happen once I start writing it.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) of the story to write and why?

My favorite part of the story is the epilogue. When I first wrote PRINCE HAFIZ'S ONLY VICE, I stopped in the middle of the book, wrote the epilogue and went back to finishing the story. I wanted to see the happy ending and the payoff for the struggle they went through. I rewrote and revised the book but the epilogue remained the same.

What about your characters surprised you while writing Prince Hafiz's Only Vice?

I knew the hero was determined to fulfill his duty but I didn't know why until he explained it to the heroine. It was a surprise and I wasn't sure if I liked it or liked that about him.

Has your life changed significantly since becoming a published writer?

I approach life and view the world as a writer. Any snippet of conversation can inspire a book. My family is used to my hermit ways when my deadline approaches. And no one wants to watch TV or movies with me because I have a tendency yell out "Foreshadowing!" or correctly suggest who the killer is.

What’s your biggest challenge as a writer? How did you overcome it, or how are you working to overcome it?

The biggest challenge is self-doubt. You don't know if can't finish the story, if it's going to work, if your editor or your readers are going to like it, etc. And you will wrestle with the self-doubts with every book almost like clockwork. The only way to overcome it is to know that you've been in this spot before, you got through it and you're going to get through it again.

What are the most important elements in good romance writing, in your opinion?

There are three important elements in good romance writing:

1. Interesting and sympathetic characters: I want a hero I can admire and a heroine I can cheer on.

2. A strong conflict: Why are the hero and heroine not together and what is keeping them apart?

3. A satisfying ending: Will the couple have a happily ever after?

What is on your “keeper shelf” of books?

There are so many books on my keeper shelf and it's grouped by authors. I have lots of books by Jayne Ann Krentz, Lynne Graham and Lori Foster.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I started reading Harlequin romance novels when I was 10 years old and I haven't stopped!

What project are you working on now?

I'm working on the revisions for TYCOON'S DELICIOUS DEBT. It is a revenge story set in Portugal. It's a Harlequin Presents and will be available July 2015.

Miriam's Surrender by Jennifer Wilck

Josh Lowenstein is a successful architect, hired to redesign the alumni club of a posh, private school in New York. He is strong, capable and knows the best way to do everything. Except let another woman in.

Miriam Goldberg is the Assistant Director of Outreach, and is Josh’s day-to-day contact for the redesign. She’s taken care of everyone around her, and forgotten how to let someone else take care of her.

With a tumultuous history, neither one is prepared to work together. As they get to know each other, the animosity disappears, but Josh is hiding something from Miriam and its discovery has the possibility of destroying their relationship. Only when they are both able to let the other in, and release some of the control they exert over everything, will they be able to see if their love can survive.

EXCERPT

“I’m glad you agreed to have dinner with me. Maybe we’ll do it again?”

“I’d like that.” She looked at Josh and smiled.

He tipped his head and Miriam could feel his breath warm her face. Mere inches apart, she could see silver and black flecks in his irises, stubble on his cheeks, the arch of his eyebrow. Shivers zinged up her spine. Like a magnetic pull, she wanted to lean into him, to feel his body against hers, to press her lips against his. But they worked together, and a kiss would change everything. As if he read her mind, he pulled back, said goodbye and got into the cab and drove away. Miriam covered her lips with her fingers.

What in the world was she supposed to do now? He’d come close to kissing her. She could still feel the electric charge between them; still catch a slight scent of his musky aftershave in the air. His hand had held her arm with enough pressure to keep her against him. Although she’d watched him leave, she could still feel the imprint of his touch. She stroked her hand up and down her arm.

Did she give away how much she wanted to kiss him too? It was so quick, so unexpected, she couldn’t be sure. Her mind shot off in all directions as she entered her building and took the elevator to her fifth floor apartment.

They worked together! How in the world was she supposed to look at him when they next met? Should she acknowledge the kiss that almost happened? Should she pretend it never did? He didn’t plan on discussing it at their next meeting, did he?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

How much of a story did you have in mind before you started writing Miriam's Surrender?

Actually, for this story, I didn’t have a lot. I knew how they met and I knew that at the point where I was starting, they hated each other—this is book #2 in my Women of Valor series. Readers don’t have to read book #1 to get into the story, though, because it can stand alone. So I knew they had to start off hating each other and end up falling in love. The rest? That was the fun part.

What about your characters surprised you while writing?

On the surface, they seem very similar—they’re both take-charge, control freaks. But they have very different reasons for being that way and they express it differently. I was surprised that two characters with similar traits could be so different. And, Josh, the hero, is the villain from the first book. He’s now one of my favorite characters.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) of Miriam's Surrender to write and why?

Okay, I’m actually changing my mind, here, because I’ve answered this question before differently. It used to be when Josh reveals his secret to Miriam—I can’t tell you what that is because of spoilers, though. But I think it’s when they go out to dinner together for the first time. Josh has the whole thing planned perfectly, but nothing goes like he expected and Miriam gets to know a different side of him, while trying to make him see that perfection isn’t necessary.

Who would you cast in the role of your main characters if your book were to be optioned for a movie?

Oh, good question! I’m not sure about current actors and actresses, but I think a young Pierce Brosnan and a young Bebe Neuwirth. Like, very young!

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

I’ve loved the response from my family and friends. They’ve been so supportive.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?

My husband gave me flowers and took me out to dinner. My parents and in-laws told everyone they’d ever met.

What’s your biggest challenge as a writer? How did you overcome it, or how are you working to overcome it?

My biggest challenge as a writer is promotion. I’m terrible at talking about myself and telling people about my book. So I try to put myself in situations where I have to do it to try to get better at it.

Finish the sentence:

One book I wish I had written is…Harry Potter. I’d love to have that kind of imagination!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

You mean other than that I write romance (everyone who meets me is surprised by that)? I’m an only child and always wished I had an older brother.

What project are you working on now?

I’m going to start book #3 in the Women of Valor series and I’m almost finished with a standalone contemporary romance inspired by an old Victorian mansion I fell in love with.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

When I was a little girl and couldn’t fall asleep, my mother would tell me to make up a story. Pretty soon, my head was filled with these stories and the characters that populated them. Each character had a specific personality, a list of likes and dislikes, and sometimes, even a specific accent or dialect. Even as an adult, I think about the characters and stories at night before I fall asleep, or in the car on my way to or from one of my daughters’ numerous activities (hey, anything that will drown out their music is a good thing).

One day, I started writing them down (it was either that or checking into the local mental hospital—the computer was way less scary). Since then, I’ve published two contemporary romances with Whiskey Creek Press. The Seduction of Esther is my first book with Rebel Ink Press, and I’m excited to be part of their team.

In the real world, I’m the mother of two amazing daughters and wife of one of the smartest men I know. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, reading, traveling and watching TV. In between chauffeuring my daughters to after-school activities that require an Excel spreadsheet to be kept straight, I serve on our Temple Board and volunteer for way more things than I have time to do. I also write freelance articles for magazines and newspapers, and edit newsletters.

When all of that gets overwhelming, I retreat to my computer, where I write stories that let me escape from reality. In my made-up world, the heroines are always smart, sassy and independent. The heroes are handsome and strong with just a touch of vulnerability. If I don’t like a character, I can delete him or her; if something doesn’t work, I can rewrite it. It’s very satisfying to be in control of at least one part of my life.

Make Me Crazy by Codi Gary

Miranda “Rand” Coleman has seen the way love can wreck a person and wants absolutely no part of it. When her granddaddy dies suddenly, he leaves a clause in his will that has her married in three months or she loses her inheritance. Unwilling to give up the Double C Ranch, she starts to set her eyes towards the eligible men in town, with little luck in finding a man she can stand for a minute let alone a year. Until she sets eyes on the new veterinarian and enlists the help of her womanizing best friend, Jake, to help.

Jake Hansen is a single guy who likes his women pretty and uncomplicated, with no plans to settle down anytime soon. When he decides to help Rand hook her man, he has no idea the effect watching Rand change would have on him. Especially when she starts letting her gorgeous brown hair down and showing off a body he didn’t even know she had. Before too long, Jake isn’t just lusting after his best friend, he’s feeling downright possessive. But when it comes down to the wire, will he get over his issues and step up to the alter…or lose the only woman he was ever meant to love?

EXCERPT

Rand pulled her hand away from him and he covered his smile with his hand as she looked surprised by the compliment. “I don’t remember.”

Tandy leaned on the table and the woman’s look was downright sultry. “Well it looks awesome on you.”

Jake blinked. The girl wasn’t being friendly. She was flirting...with Rand.

Rand seemed oblivious to Tandy’s interest. “I got it as a present for my birthday, and was going to take it back, but my granddaddy couldn’t find the receipt.”

Tandy actually batted her lashes. “Well that would have been a damn shame.”

Alright, it was funny at first but that was too much. “I’ll have the chicken enchiladas with two tacos.” Both women turned to stare at him and he focused all of his attention on Rand, “Honey, what do you want to eat?”

Rand looked back up at Tandy when she answered. “I’ll have a bean and cheese burrito with rice and beans.”

“Coming right up.” Tandy said. Her smiled faded when her gaze shifted to him, her expression downright hostile. This time he watched her walk away and turned back to Rand with wide eyes. “Did you see that?”

“You checking out our waitress?” Rand asked with false sweetness. It was his turn to be angry. “No, the glare she sent me.” “Right because women usually glare at you.” Jake said very patiently, “Rand honey, I have no interest in that woman and I’m telling you, I am not her type.” “How do you know that?” He leaned back in his seat and grinned. “Because it wasn’t me she was checking out.”

Hunter Betrayed by Nancy Corrigan: Author Interview and Giveaway

Kinky Vanilla Romance is pleased to share Hunter Betrayed by Nancy Corrigan, a Paranormal Erotic Romance released September 3, 2014 by Ellora's Cave Publishing. It is book one in the Wild Hunt series.

http://goddessfishpromotions.blogspot.com/2014/07/virtual-book-tour-hunter-betrayed-by.html

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions (click on the banner above to see more tour dates). Nancy will be awarding a $50 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour, and a $15 Ellora’s GC to a randomly drawn host.

Hunter Betrayed by Nancy Corrigan

Tainted from birth, Harley lives a life cloaked in darkness and temptation. She resists the lure of her evil legacy by holding the memory of her ghostly savior close. Every night without him is agony. She fantasizes about him and yearns for his body, but he’s not the protector or lover she’s envisioned. He’s a Hunter bred to eliminate her kind. He’s also her only hope of salvation.

Calan, the leader of the Wild Hunt, was created to protect mankind from the Unseelie Court. For a millennium, he’s sacrificed to ensure the horrid creatures remain in the Underworld, but his strength wanes. He must rely on his enemy’s daughter to save him, but he doesn’t expect the intensity of their lust or love. Her touch calms his wild nature and ignites his carnal desires. He’ll risk all to save her, but doing so forces him to make the ultimate sacrifice, one that’ll damn him to suffer forever in his own living hell.

A Romantica® Paranormal erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

EXCERPT

Calan heard the torch’s crackle minutes before the sinful fragrance of oranges and spice reached him.

Harley.

He closed his eyes and breathed a sigh of relief. Several hours had passed since he’d spoken to her. He’d almost given up hope that she would come to him.

The click of her boots resounded in the hallway. He focused on the stairs leading into his cell. Anticipation held him taut. Nine years he’d waited for her. In that time, he’d experienced a range of emotions from disappointment to hatred, but he’d never let go of the longing. He’d left a piece of himself with her. He wanted it back. Whether he kept the woman he’d given it to remained undecided.

Dirty white shoes appeared on the first step. Shapely legs covered in a clingy black material showed next. Another step revealed flaring hips that gave way to a small waist he could probably span with one hand. The longing he’d always carried for her turned into lust, a burning desire he couldn’t deny.

His pent-up breath escaped in a shudder. A tremor shook the dainty hand curled at her hip. The response, along with the heavy evidence of her arousal in the air added to the sexual tension tightening his limbs.

Full breasts that strained the confines of her shirt rose and fell with her rapid breaths. He should coax her the remaining distance but couldn’t form words. The sight of her pebbled nipples pushing against her thin top shut his mind down. Getting her naked and filling her became his only thought.

She reached out, braced a hand against the wall and took the last step.

Her gaze latched onto his.

His heart stopped.

Dear gods, the fuzzy image he’d held of her didn’t do her justice. She was the most beautiful female he’d ever seen.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Please tell us more about the Huntsmen of the Wild Hunt. Who are they and what can we expect from the series?

The Huntsmen are demigods born of Arawn, Lord of the Underworld, and a human mother for the sole purpose of protecting mankind from the Unseelie fairy court. The Wild Hunt is the race to capture the escaped beings and return them to their prison. Hunter Betrayed as the introduction to the world of the Huntsmen allows the Wild Hunt to ride again. The Hunters have been betrayed and cursed. The series will follow the surviving Huntsmen’s journey to heal their souls in order to save the world.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) of Hunter Betrayed to write and why?

My favorite chapter is the prologue to Hunter Betrayed. It captures the Wild Hunt in vivid detail. I’m a very visual person and I woke from a dream with this scene in my head. It launched the Wild Hunt world and defined the characters and their struggles in my head. Their lives revolve around duty and sacrifice. The Wild Hunt books will give them the one thing denied to them—love.

What about your characters surprised you while writing?

How naughty they are. LOL. Here are these immortals who were literally birthed for one purpose—to protect—and they harbor an intense sexual hunger. The reason makes perfect sense of course. They can become consumed by their need to seek retaliation for the wronged, but even the most wicked creature can be tamed. Sex works wonders on redirecting the intense focus from fury to passion.

How did you select the cover for Hunter Betrayed?

The only input I have on covers is to offer suggestions on mood and physical characteristics, but I think the Ellora’s Cave art department did a wonderful job taking my ideas are creating the cover for Hunter Betrayed. The model depicts Calan wonderfully from his tortured expression to his impressive body. Oh, and the hoodie…perfect!!! I love it!

How long do you generally let a story idea ‘marinate’ in your head before you start the book?

It depends on how badly the characters want their story told and what I’m working on when ‘the idea’ hits me. I write down aspects of it as the story unfolds in my head for whenever I can get to it.

What are the most important elements in good romance writing, in your opinion?

Passion, devotion and a willingness to give your partner everything. I’m not a fan of ‘asshole’ heroes who redeem themselves in the end. Women and men alike deserve to be respected. Nor will I ever write anything with cheating. I’m a romantic at heart J

What’s your biggest challenge as a writer? How did you overcome it, or  how are you working to overcome it?

The lure of social media. I find myself opening up my internet for a quick peek of email or what’s new on social media then lose track of time when I should be writing. I’m trying to limit my time on the internet. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. It’s a work in progress.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

Fans. I love talking to people who love the characters and worlds I create as much as I do. I treasure those interactions.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

Although it’s in my bio, I think many people are surprised to know that I have a science background. I still run into the stigma of you’re a geek how can you write erotic?

Finish the sentence: One book I wish I had written is… Interview with a Vampire.

I love this book and the world Anne Rice created. It was my first venture into the paranormal world and it completely captivated me.

What project are you working on now?

I just finished Hunter Forsaken, book 2 of the Wild Hunt series and am working on book 2 of a contemporary erotic series tentatively titled, Sander’s Valley. But there are a few characters demanding their HEAs be written including a wolf shifter from my Royal Pride series.

Katie Reus Interview
  1. Ebook or print? And why?

I’m going to take the easy way out and say both, lol! I actually prefer print for my non-fiction books. I read a lot of books for research; in psychology or criminal justice text books and autobiography type books and find them much easier to read in print because they’re usually trade size or huge textbooks. And some non-fiction books I read I actually can’t find in ebook for whatever reason so print is the only option. For my romance books, however, I prefer ebooks because those often come in mass market size (which I hate trying to keep those pages open!) and it’s just easier to carry around 100+ romance books on my kindle instead of in my purse.

  1. What are your favorite TV shows?
I’m going to sound like a total TV junkie but here goes… Castle, The Strain, Major Crimes, Rizzoli and Isles, the older Supernatural seasons (I haven’t seen the last two b/c I lost interest), Burn Notice before it went off the air and Game of Thrones all the way!

  1. What is your favorite meal?
I really love eggplant parmesan. Seriously, I could eat it all the time!

  1. What makes you happy?
A quiet Saturday morning with a full pot of coffee, an empty house and hours to work on my computer with no interruptions. On the flip side, I love it when my boys (my husband and son) are infiltrating the house with their natural loudness and my little one is saying ‘mommy, mommy’ every two seconds because he doesn’t want me to miss a single second of the important things he’s doing like kicking a soccer ball in the kitchen or doing backflips off the couch.

  1. If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?
To fly because come on, that’s pretty freaking awesome.

  1. What is a talent you wish you had, but don't?
I wish I had a scrap of artistic talent. I can write a 100K book in 30 days but ask me to draw anything other than a stick person and it’s not happening. And even my stick people are pretty embarrassing. My husband is amazingly gifted when it comes to drawing and it makes me crazy because he rarely does it. It’s like he’s just sitting on all this talent. And the other day my 3 year old drew a cat better than I could ever could… and laughed at me when I tried to draw Mickey Mouse for him. Getting mocked by a 3 year old = awesome.

  1. Favorite place to read?
A year ago we moved and got all new furniture and one of the purchases was for me alone. I got a leather chair-and-a-half because they’re freaking huge and cushy along with an ottoman and I absolutely love it. I love curling up in it with a mug of hot tea or a glass of wine and just reading in silence. It doesn’t happen often so I savor that time in my chair!

  1. Favorite non-alcoholic drink.
I live in the country so Starbucks is a pretty rare thing (heh, I have to drive two towns over to get to one), but I love their chai tea lattes. Love, love, love them!

  1. What is your work schedule like when you are writing?
Ha, when am I not writing? Writing is my full time job and I work between 40-60 hours a week, depending on things. This summer has been a little crazy but my ‘normal-ish’ schedule during the school year: I wake up early before my son gets up so I can sneak in an hour or two of catching up on emails and social media time. Then after dropping him off at pre-school, I chug a couple cups of coffee and try to knock out 3K words before noon. When working on a project, which lately is pretty much *always*, I tend to write 3K words a day, 5 days a week no matter what. It usually ends up being more, but that’s my goal and anything else is just cake. Then in the afternoons if I’ve met my word count goal I get caught up on other things like print book formatting, promo stuff, website updates… and a billion tiny things that just need to get done during the week. Other than actual writing, the stuff I do changes week to week. Luckily I get to be pretty flexible with my schedule. The only thing I’m not flexible with is my word count. No matter what, I try to write 15-20K a week.

  1. If you had to do your journey to getting published all over again, what would you do differently?
I wouldn’t be so eager to sign with a publisher that I wouldn’t do my homework. Early on in my career I signed with a small publisher (and have since gotten all my rights back) for three books. I should have waited and honed my craft more and learned more about contract negotiations. Basically, I would have had more patience, done a lot more research and talked to other authors about their experience with that house. It’s hard to regret that decision though, because by signing with them I ended up meeting someone who is now my best friend and the best critique partner I could ask for.

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER by P.J. Fiala: Author Interview and Giveaway

Kinky Vanilla Romance is pleased to share Dog Days of Summer by P.J. Fiala, an Erotic Romance released on August 1, 2014 from Rolling Thunder Romance / HenschelHAUS Publishing.

http://goddessfishpromotions.blogspot.com/2014/07/virtual-book-tour-dog-days-of-summer-by.html

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions (click on the banner above to see more tour dates). Be sure to follow the tour and comment; the more you comment, the better your chances of winning the giveaway.

Dog Days of Summer by P.J. Fiala

Owning Rolling Thunder Motorcycles, Inc. and raising his twin sons was top priority in Dog’s life. That was until he met Jocelyn James, the sweet, loving, single mother of Gunnar, a young man who works for Dog.

Joci raised Gunnar alone all of his life after her cheating, dickhead of a boyfriend ran off with another woman. She finished school, started her own graphic design business and hung out with friends and family. The last thing on her mind was men! That is until she met Dog.

The chemistry is undeniable. The passion is incredible. The family bond is like no other.

EXCERPT

Chapter 1

There were times like this when Joci wanted to burst out laughing it felt so good. The wind in her face, running through her hair, the sun warming her skin, the roar all around her, seven hundred-plus pounds of pure unadulterated power between her legs, and she was controlling it all. Gliding through traffic with her son, Gunnar, just a few yards in front of her, feeling all the love and joy God made for her, just her. Yes, these were the times Joci enjoyed. She smiled as they came up behind a car and floated over to the left lane to pass. As she watched, Gunnar glided easily past the car, his dark hair pulled into a low ponytail, the two little kids in the back seat watching him and smiling at each other. You could tell they were thinking, Someday, I’m going to do that. Then as she pulled up alongside to pass them, they started smiling and pointing at her, one of them turning to the adult in the front seat and saying something causing the driver to look over at her as she passed him. He smiled at her, and Joci smiled back at the reaction; it happened often. She could almost hear the kids in the back: Look dad, a girl on a motorcycle.

She easily pulled in front of the car and continued on down the highway to their destination. She loved this life, this group of people that she had, at least, this in common with. A few minutes later, Gunnar and Joci put their turn signals on to turn off the highway, onto a frontage road, and into the parking lot of Rolling Thunder Motorcycles. They navigated the last few shoppers straggling out at the end of the day.

Gunnar worked at Rolling Thunder Motorcycles as a mechanic for the past year. He loved working here. He loved the people he worked with, he loved the customers and their bikes, he loved building bikes, and lately Dog had let him help in the design on some of the custom bikes they were known for. And well-known they were becoming. Dog built some of the hottest bikes around. He had recently been in Rider magazine, and showcased on several “biker” shows. His reputation for building beautiful, custom, mechanically sound bikes was becoming legend.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

What was your favorite chapter (or part) of Dog Days of Summer to write and why?

My favorite part to write was when Jeremiah and Joci finally got together. In every book that’s my favorite part. When the attraction is just too much, they realize they need each other and they want to be together. Sigh!

What about your characters surprised you while writing?

How seemingly dense and yet loyal Dog was to and about LuAnn. He couldn’t see the trouble she was causing, he was trying to be loyal to her and yet, he wanted Joci more than anyone or anything else, but couldn’t see the harm he was doing by being loyal to LuAnn.

How did you select the cover for Dog Days of Summer?

My publisher found an artist to do it. It is actually the second cover I had for Dog Days. The first one was much darker and harder to see as a thumbnail. My publisher suggested something completely different, and we pulled this one together. What I knew had to be on it was a sexy man and his motorcycle.

What are the most important elements in good romance writing, in your opinion?

Everyone is different in their taste. Some people love angst and drama. Some people love sweet quiet love stories. Some people love schticky one-liners. I love sweet, simple love stories about people I feel can be real and a little drama or angst thrown in for good measure.

What’s your biggest challenge as a writer? How did you overcome it, or how are you working to overcome it?

My biggest challenge has been the marketing. How to get the word out. I struggled in the beginning with the usual stuff; how to find good beta readers, how to find an editor, how to find cover artists, etc. But those people come into your life. Marketing has been the biggest challenge. Not sure I’ve overcome it, I’m working at it day by day. I belong to tweet groups and author networks and we help each other with obstacles, technology and struggles.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

Out of the blue, I have received emails from people that have read my books and tell me how much they loved them and why. Usually it hit some personally connection with them. That is so rewarding and has me floating on a cloud for days afterwards.

Finish the sentence: One book I wish I had written is…

Anything by Kristen Ashley. She is a favorite of mine and an author I hope to be like someday.

I read in your bio that you and your husband travel around by motorcycle seeing new sites and meeting new people. What's been your favorite motorcycle trip so far? Why?

Haha, we were just talking about this. We usually travel with a group of very nice, very fun people. But a few years ago, Gene and I decided to take a trip on our own. We headed down to the Smokey Mountains by way of Gatlinburg Tennessee. We hoped on the Blue Ridge Parkway and we rode it all the way to the beginning of Virginia. We had no schedule, no clocks, we stopped when we felt like it. Sometimes we slept in late, sometimes we got up early. It was the best trip.

What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?

I am a cancer survivor. I had Thyroid Cancer in 2001. I am cancer free now, but I’m on medication and I have regular checkups.

What project are you working on now?

Rydin the Storm Out is the next book to come out. It is the second book in the Rolling Thunder Series and is about Ryder Sheppard, Dog’s son. It is coming back from betas now. Then I’ll send it off to my editor and then to my publisher for publication. I am hoping by Christmas it will be out.

Thank you very much for hosting me today, I genuinely appreciate your time and the time of your readers. Thank you all.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I was born in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri named Bridgeton. During my time in Missouri, I explored the Ozarks, swam in the Mississippi River, and played kickball and endless games of hide and seek with the neighborhood kids. Spending summers in Kentucky with my grandmother, Ruth, are the fondest childhood memories for me.

At the age of thirteen, my family moved to Wisconsin to learn to farm. Yes, learn to farm! That was interesting. Taking city kids and throwing them on a farm with twenty-eight cows purchased from the humane society because they had been abused was interesting. I learned to milk cows, the ins and outs of breeding and feeding schedules, the never ending haying in the summer, and trying to stay warm in the winter. Our first winter in Wisconsin we had thirty-six inches of snow in one storm and were snowed in our house for three days! Needless to say, I wasn’t loving Wisconsin.

I am now married with four children and two grandchildren and a new one on the way this summer. I have learned to love Wisconsin, though I still hate snow. Wisconsin and the United States are beautiful, and my husband and I travel around by motorcycle seeing new sites and meeting new people. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are interested in where we are going and what we have seen along the way. At every gas station, restaurant, and hotel, we have people come up to us and ask us about what we are doing as well as offer advice on which roads in the area are better than others.

I come from a family of veterans. My grandfather, father, brother, two of my sons, and one daughter-in-law are all veterans. Needless to say, I am proud. Proud to be an American and proud of the service my amazing family has given.
