About the Book:
The story of otherworldly Blighted Basin continues in THE TWISTING...

In a valley hidden from the rest of Victorian England, Annmar Masterson has found friendship and acceptance at Wellspring farm. But as her recently discovered magical abilities grow, unstoppable crop-eating pests drive her new home to the brink of collapse.

Shapeshifter Daeryn Darkcoat's heart pulls toward Annmar, but duty comes first. With harvests across the Farmlands shire facing destruction, the predator guard scrambles for new solutions, calling upon the ingenuity of animal shifters, mechanics and growers alike.

Desperation drives landowners to utilize prototype machines, heedless of the threat to their way of life. As the danger mounts, Annmar's knowledge of Outside ways—and her magic—might be more important than anyone realizes.

Weaving steampunk engines and a land of wild magic with a coming-of-age romance, this sequel to THE UNRAVELING and second volume in THE LUMINATED THREADS whisks readers off on another spellbinding adventure.

THE TWISTING is a full-length novel, approximately 370 pages, with a sweet romance for readers 18+ due to mature themes. Please note: This is volume 2 of a three-part serialized novel. Volume 1, The UNRAVELING is available now, and Volume 3 releases in the spring of 2016 to complete Annmar and Daeryn’s steampunk fantasy romance. Excerpt:

Annmar scrunched back into her pillow. This wasn’t a cat. The face was too pointed, never mind the sleek body three times as long as it was tall. Yet when she looked into its face, the familiar eyes belonged to…

“Daeryn?”

Eyes squinting, the animal’s ears pressed flat. Its head sank, giving a little jerk up and down.

Had he…nodded? “That is you.” Daeryn. This was a polecat. Her drawings had been correct, but not the same as seeing one uninjured, acting normal. Or as normal as a polecat in someone’s bed would act.

She pressed her fingertips to her temples. Oh, Lord, just stop thinking already. But her head didn’t hurt, her vision wasn’t cloudy, and neither were her thoughts. She lowered her hands and looked around to confirm they were alone before fixing her gaze on…him. “What are you doing in my room?”

His shoulders lifted.

That was a shrug. He half-crouched and jumped to the foot of the bed, then to the floor, all before she knew that’s what he had in mind. He disappeared behind the end of her bedstead.

She half-sat up, and as she started swinging her legs around, a hand pulled down the extra quilt that hung on the end of her bed. Annmar gasped and scooted under her covers. A moment later, Daeryn’s tousled brown hair came into view. The quilt swung through the air, and he stood, the fabric draped over his shoulders and held closed in the front.

He squinted at her, his expression the same as the polecat’s, looking very sleepy. “Sorry,” he muttered. “Didn’t mean to surprise you.”

What was she supposed to say to that? He’d been in her room. Sleeping in her room. In her bed! Oh, Lord, what would Mother… Nothing. Mother wasn’t around to worry about anymore, as Mary Clare had pointed out. Annmar had no one to answer to, Blighted Basin society included. Their lack of rules completely befuddled her. How did these people function?

Still. This was highly improper. She glared at him, and he seemed to shrink beneath the quilt, drawing it closer to his body. He was likely naked.

She heated, the blush running from her chest up over her face and…down. Thinking of it just brought on more heat. Mercy, in her bed. Had he been…

“You…uh, you haven’t been in…here as…” She swallowed.

His eyes widened, and he shook his head vehemently. “Only as a polecat.” He took a step back. “I wouldn’t do that… Not to you.” He turned and walked to the door. “I’ll leave.”

Yes, he most certainly was naked under there, and a part of her was curious. She was nineteen, a grown woman. Her first look at him had been brief—she swallowed—but good. “Hold on a minute,” she gasped.

He paused in the open doorway and half-turned to face her.

“I don’t understand what you’re doing in my room.”

“Sleeping here.”

“Why?”

His brows and shoulders lifted at the same time. He looked as confused as she felt when he stepped out and closed the door.

Book Blitz: Chained Melodies by Debrah Martin #giveaway

ChainedMelodies (2)
Welcome to the Book Blitz for Chained Melodies by Debrah Martin!

Chained Melodies: a startling transgender story to rival The Danish Girl:
Chained Melodies is the story of two men, three people and the meaning of love.

ChainedMelodiesEngland in the 1960s: Will Robinson and Tom Wilson are just two ordinary boys – best friends, But Will and Tom will grow up to be very different people to the schoolboys who scrumped apples and scraped knees together. By the time they’re in their twenties, Tom has experienced death and disillusionment whilst serving in Northern Ireland and is questioning everything he ever believed in. Will has discovered he’s living in the wrong body. It takes courage to face the truth, but it takes a different kind of courage to live with it. Tom and Will find that courage through each other – and an unexpected kind of love. Chained Melodies tells Will, Tom and Billie’s stories – an echo of Lili Elbe’s, and a foreshadowing of Caitlyn Jenner’s.

Chained Melodies was first released in early 2013 to critical acclaim as Chained Melody, but has been out of print for the last year. Reviewers commented on the first release:

“…a beautiful book about love, acceptance and self-discovery …”
“…truly a must read …”
“…it's not a transsexual love story, it's a love story that happens to feature transsexuals. The author did an amazing job making the characters three-dimensional and their self-discovery journey is transforming not just for them, but the reader too.”

It has now been updated and revised and is on release from 5th October 2015 under its new title, coincidentally close to the forthcoming limited release of The Danish Girl starring Eddie Redmayne – the story of Lili Elbe, the first male to female SRS, and also mentioned in Chained Melodies. The author worked with members of the transgender community to write the book, and was interviewed on radio with one of them following the original release, which was also linked to the nationally touring portrait exhibition of transgender people titled Living My Life, compiled by Sheffield NHS trust.

Excerpt Her words came out in a whisper. “Thank you for everything. For coming to my rescue, for…” She was saying goodbye, yet her chin tilted toward his and she took a step closer, her lips barely parted, inviting. She peered up at him and met his gaze with a look that was surprisingly heated, decidedly predatory. There was no mistaking it. Melissa wanted him too. That was all the encouragement Stone needed to take her in his arms and bring his mouth down on hers with a hungry desire that surpassed all expectations. Melissa gasped with delight and sighed into his kiss. Stone’s empty mug slid from her grasp and landed somewhere on the sofa. Stone pressed his eager body to hers and ran his hands up her back, threading his fingers through her hair. She was glorious, beautiful, her gaze sparking with reciprocal passion. Stone groaned and kissed her again, savoring the taste of her, delighting in the sweetness of her body molded to his, as his blood pumped harder and his heart beat like a kettledrum gone out of control. It was more than a kiss; it was like coming home. “Stone,” she said breathlessly. He opened his eyes to find his cheeks nestled between her palms. She looked up at him her face flushed with longing. “I think you’d better go.” “Yeah,” he said, his pulse pounding. “I’d better go.” Thunder boomed and rain slapped the windowpanes, while the fire hissed and moaned. Neither one moved. “Melissa,” Stone whispered, brushing his lips over hers. “You and me… It’s like… I don’t know.” “I know,” she replied, meeting his kiss. “I feel it too.”

Book Description:

Irishman Blackie O'Brien led a sinful and self-destructive life of women, alcohol and drugs. He was the best, winningest, champion steeplechase jockey in the history of the sport until a near-fatal racing accident ended his career.

But this was no "accident"- his ruthless ex-agent, Mickey Reegan orchestrated the whole thing. It seems that the luck o' the Irish has deserted Blackie once and for all.

And Blackie is no ordinary Irishman. This lusty young man is the direct descendent of Brian Boru, the most influential High king of Ireland. If Ireland still had a king, Blackie would be it.

Now, Blackie is a man without a career and without a kingdom.

Cheltenham

Warrior Spirit chronicles Blackie’s journey from the green valleys of Ireland to the privileged horse country of Middleburg, Virginia. As Blackie begins to despair over his future, in enters beautiful, young Meg, who brings her horses to Blackie’s family farm where he’s been recuperating from the accident.
Their sexual chemistry is immediate.

But Blackie’s family has other plans for him. They believe he’s driven by the spirit of an ancient Irish warrior and demand he find a place in Ireland’s political leadership.

From fighting off alcoholic temptations, thwarting an attempted rape of Meg, and stopping thugs trying to take his life, Blackie leaps over one hurdle after another. Will Blackie ultimately find the future he’s meant to have with the love of a good woman?

About the Author:

The three guys who put up with my writing.
I started writing The King of Ireland series in 2008 when I had my second knee replaced. I was immobilized with ice on my knee for hours during the day and was, of course, bored to tears. The’King’ story was something I had played with in my head for maybe twenty-five years. Watching one more TV show, I decided to write it down. I wrote long-hand and quickly filled many yellow legal pads and kept on going. Luckily my sister-in-law was a very good typist, so I enlisted her help.

I made a lot of mistakes at first and along the way learned a great deal about the craft of writing and I’m still learning. I got a mountain of advice and help from agents, editors, contest judges, critique groups and friends. I found quickly that their was something called “word count” and it was frowned upon to have too much of it. So I had to pare my 300K word novel down to where somebody might look at it. Hence I now have a three book, one novella series and might add more if my readers get invested in my characters.

Here is the real star of the show-Beauregarde-our 4 year old poodle
I love my characters by the way and feel very close to them. I got highly insulted when a friend said Blackie just wasn’t her cup of tea! I have a passion for horses just like my characters and have since I was a little girl and saw my first horse. Our property backed up to the Garrison Forest School for Girls in Maryland and they rode their horses through our woods.

I started riding when I was about eight years old and rode consistently until in my thirties and was lucky enough to have my own horse and pony for ten years. I did a lot of showing and did mostly jumping. Later I discovered dressage and became fascinated with it just like the main characters in my book. I retired in 2010 and briefly before that I started riding again and it was glorious to be on a horse once more. I’m retired from Johns Hopkins University where I worked for 27 years as an Electron Microscopist. The best thing is now I get to write full time and feel very blessed to be able to do so.

Excerpt: THE KISS

THE KISS

They got the horses ready, and led them out of the barn. She was getting ready to mount Cloudy when Blackie walked up behind her, leaned into her and whispered with his mouth against her ear,

“Would you like a leg up?”

Her heart flipped and she knew she was blushing from the huge rush she got. Meg wanted to just turn around in his arms and kiss him but she stuck her leg out and he flipped her into the saddle

“Let’s take a different trail today.”

“Okay, lead the way.”

He took off at a trot and she followed. They rode along the edge of a field next to the woods. Meg loved watching him ride he was so good.

Turning into the woods, Blackie slowed to a walk. The peace of the woods surrounded them like a bower; the breeze gently waving the branches; the birds singing their love songs.

He reined Sandman back to ride next to her. Quiet for a few minutes, he stopped, Meg halted Cloudy and Blackie stared at her. He moved Sandman over close, leaned in and kissed her gently on the mouth.

His lips were soft as he brushed them like a whisper over hers. The jolt and rush she got wasn’t exactly soft. She instantly wanted more but he had already kicked Sandy into a dead run.

* * *

Christ, what am I doing?

He jerked the horse away and put him into a gallop to cover up his surprise and embarrassment. Embarrassed! He’d never felt that way before, kissing a woman, even when he was a kid. The instant arousal caught him off guard, another reason to get out of there before she noticed. He knew her mouth would be that sweet. As he galloped off, he licked his lips to savor the taste of her.

* * *

She was startled. He’d caught her off guard. It took her a beat to react and then she took off after him.

Oh my God. He just kissed me.

She’d been wondering what it would be like to kiss him, but hadn’t expected it to be that gentle or potent. The kiss had plucked her like a harp string all the way to her toes.

Excerpt I’m must still be daydreaming as I quickly turn around and run smack into a man spilling his drink all over his obviously very expensive suit. “Oh crap! I’m so sorry,” I yell. I start brushing my hand along his suit coat. Crap, what am I doing touching this man? I finally glance up at his face and wow—tall, dark hair, and very…um…masculine. I must be staring because I don’t even realize that I’m still brushing the front of his coat and now his pants. I’m beyond humiliated now. “Please don’t worry. It’s fine.” He smiles, holding up his hands. “I mean, it’s only a brand new suit, but hey that’s what dry cleaners are for, right?” “Um, right.” I hesitate. “Sorry for um, brushing, um.” Really, Maris, shut up, I think to myself. He holds out his hand. “Trevor Ericson.” “Hi, I’m Maris Forrester.” I shake his hand and smile thankfully. I really appreciate him changing the subject from my invading his personal space. “Maris? That a nickname?” he asks curiously. “No, a family name actually; I’m named after my grandmother.” He has managed to find a few cocktail napkins lying around and he wipes off his coat. “That’s a cool name. So, how do you know the Phillips?” Phillips? What’s he talking about? “The Phillips?” I ask, trying not to cringe that I was rubbing the front of his suit for what seemed like five minutes. “Yes, Tom and Liv, our hosts for this event?” He seems shocked that I have no idea who Tom and Liv are. I guess I should know that but too late now. Suddenly, I feel guilty like I just crashed a wedding or something. “Oh right, I don’t actually—we were invited by a mutual friend. It’s a great party though,” I say as I glance around. “Yes, they do this every year to benefit the arts. It’s such a shame so many schools are removing them from their schedules. Liv, of course, has such a passion for this cause being that she’s also a musician. She’s performed all over the world.” “She was a performer?” I ask excitedly. “That’s fantastic. I’m a singer, too, or at least I was, now I’m a vocal instructor.” “Really? That’s interesting, why don’t you sing anymore?” Should I be having this conversation with a perfect stranger? He just keeps asking me questions. I probably shouldn’t be rude considering I just spilled alcohol over his Armani suit. Okay, so I don’t know for sure that it’s Armani, maybe Versace? I’m not exactly up-to-date on what designers men are wearing being that Kyle is more of a Gap kind of guy. “You know how it is, life I guess. Anyway, where did Liv perform?” “With some orchestra, she’s an amazing violin player. I went to college with Tom, we were fraternity brothers.” I roll my eyes, figures that Trevor was a frat boy. He’s totally charming and outgoing, he was probably the president, too. “Did you just give me an eye roll?” he asks playfully. I guess that was pretty obvious. I laugh. “Yes. I was just thinking that I could totally see you being a frat boy.” He cracks a smile. “I take offense to that, but I guess the choir girls don’t really like frat boys do they? I may have to send you my dry cleaning bill after all.” I start to feel uncomfortable. My amazing boyfriend is somewhere around here waiting for me and I’m chatting (not flirting) with some random frat boy.

Book Blitz - WHAT IF by Rita Szollos + #giveaway

Today I'm excited to host a stop on the blitz tour for What If by Rita Szollos! This is a romantic comedy and the book is free for for Kindle October 5-9 only! We also have two great giveaways for you at the end of this post!

About the Book:

cover_paperbackWhat If is a romantic comedy and adventure about a black and white photograph.

Ailie Faulkner, a single, 39 year-old woman, married to her work, treasures a black and white photograph, and she’s stored it in her closet for more than a decade. Like a wistful teenager staring adoringly at a poster above her bed, Ailie has spent years returning to this photo again and again, concocting fantasies and daydreams about the photo’s handsome content.

Prone to list making and overall levelheadedness, Ailie usually isn’t one to believe in fate, but her curiosity (ahem, obsession!) with the photograph leads her to a life-changing decision and sends her on an adventure filled with humor, travel, bouts of nausea, unexpected discoveries, and reflections on cooking. Encouraged by her overbearing but obliging mother and an inquisitive grandmother, and guided by the insightful (albeit often contradictory) advice of her best friends, Ailie endeavors to learn about the photo, the person within its frame, and the possibilities of their future.

Add it to your Goodreads shelf &
it's FREE for Kindle, Oct 5-9 only!
