EXCERPT:

Luke worked his fingers into my hair and tilted my head back. He placed small kisses down along my neck to the hollow of my throat. I closed my eyes, savoring the feel of his mouth on my skin.

“You smell like cinnamon.” He gently nipped my shoulder. “And you taste like vanilla. You are a God damn walking dessert.”

A small laugh turned into a moan as his thumb brushed my nipple. Heat pooled in my lower stomach. I tugged at his shirt, desperate to get it off him. There were too many clothes separating us.

Luke stilled my hand. “No, wait.”

I glanced up at him. Last I remembered, you didn’t wear clothes during sex. “No?”
My head grew dizzy with the smell of pure male as his lips grazed my ear. “I want to take things slow.” He unbuttoned my jeans and dragged down the zipper. When he caught sight of the bright pink hearts on my thong, a slow grin spread across his face. “There’s nothing sexier than a woman in pink.”

Capturing my mouth with his, he backed me up against the wall. Every nerve ending in my body screamed for release. I titled my hips into his hardness, eliciting a groan from both our lips.

“Luke, please,” I begged. “I need you inside me.”

Struggles of the Women Folk is based on fictional characters created from stories my grandma shared with me when I was child.  It is the story of Georgie, a young Black girl in the South during the 1940s. I hope that you can appreciate her pain, suffering and betrayal as you travel with her on highs and lows you won't anticipate. This is the story of the power of a woman's courage, love, strength and faith that exists within each and every one us, whether we know it or not..

“Morning country bumpkins,” she said, same as usual.

“I don’t know why you have to be so rude to us every morning! What makes you think you so much better than us? How come we always gotta wait for you every morning? We workin in the same shop, doing the same stuff. Why you think you so much better than us?” I said as Miss Hazel and Sharon looked at me wide eyed.

“Look at you! Need I say more?” Regina smirked.

“No, you don’t need to say more, but I sure can. Like how you and Mr. Anderson been breaking dem springs on dat bed upstairs almost every night. Iz dat why you think you better than us? Cuz you up dere spreading your legs for dat white man?”

“Shut up!”

“No, you shut up! I don’t want to hear nothing else outta you! Not one more mornin! You just common! Messing round with somebody else’s husband foe a few nice dresses. I know your kind.” I didn’t know why I was so mad at her, but I just wanted to snap her head off.

“Shut up! That’s a lie.”

No it ain’t. I hears yawl almost ever night.”

You just sayin that cuz you jealous.”

“Jealous! Jealous of what? You ain’t got nothing I want! You mean, and ya nasty and common on top of it!”

“Just say one more word and I’ll . . .”

“You’ll what? Girrl, you really don’t want no parts of me. You take one more step and that’ll be your last! I’m sick of you!” Before I knew it, I was within arm’s reach of Regina. I had every intention of beating her down to the floor.

“Okay girls, that’s enough,” Miss Hazel interrupted. “Regina and Sharon, why don’t you go back up to your rooms for a minute.”

What? Why we gotta go? She’s the one causing problems,” Regina said as she began to make her way up the stairs. I guess she could see from the look on Miss Hazel’s face that she better not push it.
“I’m sorry, Miss Hazel,” I said after they left. “I’m just tired of her picking on me and Sharon all the time. Plus I miss my momma, and . . . and I don’t feel good.”

“I know it must be hard being so far away with no family around, child.” No one had called me child since I left my momma in Virginia. I missed her so much. I missed Donnie so much. I felt so lonely.

“You know, everybody has a story. Things aren’t always as they seem,” Miss Hazel said. “Regina has a story to tell as well. That don’t make it right for her to act the way she been acting, but she’s had her troubles too.

Joan had barely had the thought when she heard the thunder of a fast moving horse. Not horses, horse, she realized. For one moment she was so panicked at the realization and the fear that it might be Cam, that she froze on the road like a deer before oncoming hunters. But then her brain kicked in and sent her scurrying to the side of the road and the bushes that waited there. She dove into them without looking back, then hunkered down, trying to make herself as small as possible so that the bush would hide her. She knew she’d failed when the approaching horse suddenly slowed and then stopped just on the other side of the bushes.

“Joan?”

“No,” she instinctively blurted and then could have kicked herself. No? For the sake of the good Lord, what was the matter with her? She should have kept her mouth shut and hoped he’d ride on. Surely he hadn’t seen her? And if he had, he’d only caught a glimpse and couldn’t have been sure it was her. At least not until she’d said no, not even bothering to try to disguise her voice.

“Are ye comin’ out? Or shall I come join ye in the bushes?” Cam asked calmly.

Joan closed her eyes briefly and then sighed and stood up to scowl at him. “How did you know I was here?”

“I saw ye rush over and throw yerself behind the bush,” he answered quietly.

“Well surely you only caught a glimpse. I could have been anyone,” she pointed out with irritation.

“Aye,” he allowed. “Except that yer behind was poking out of the bush, and I’d know that derriere anywhere, under any circumstances.”

Storms of Lazarus (Shadows of Asphodel #2)

Sometimes escape is impossible. Sometimes love isn't enough.

1913. Christmas Eve. Ardis hardly expects a quiet holiday with Wendel, between fleeing Constantinople and hiding from an ancient society of assassins. And they owe a debt to a certain archmage.

In Königsberg, Prussia, they work with Konstantin on the next evolution of Project Lazarus. Wendel once called Königsberg home, the city now besieged by the Russians and their clockwork engines of war. This may be Wendel’s last chance to save his family and find redemption, but he's tormented by nightmares and tempted by laudanum. Ardis fears her love isn’t enough to save Wendel. Her hands are full piloting the automatons, and she's terrified to tell him a secret of her own. Will they—and their love—survive the storms of war?

Author Interview

What came first, the characters or the story itself?

The characters came first. This is going to sound very Twilight, but I dreamed about the first scene in the book, where Wendel is bleeding out in the snow. And when I woke up and wrote down the scene, the rest of the characters and the story itself soon followed.

What about your characters surprised you while writing?

How quickly they had chemistry on the page. I know readers dislike "insta-love," but for Ardis and Wendel it felt like the right thing to do for their personalities. Yes, there's definitely lust in there, but it leads to something deeper. (Confession: I believe in insta-love in real life.)

What was your favorite chapter (or part) of Shadows of Asphodel to write and why?

I really liked writing the scene in the cafe with the French toast, because of the banter between Ardis and Wendel.

Do you have an ideal reader in mind when you write? If so, please describe that reader.

My ideal reader is someone who wants intelligent romance and a pretty gritty fantasy plot in the same book. Someone who wants two badass characters to meet and fall in love while fighting side by side in an intricate dieselpunk world. And this reader should appreciate steamy sex scenes. Really, any reader who genuinely gets the book works for me.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

Every time a reader tells me they loved my characters I feel that first-page-of-a-new-book excitement all over again.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?

Pizza. ;)

What’s your biggest challenge as a writer? How did you overcome it, or how are you working to overcome it?

My biggest challenge as a writer is doubt, and it's something I'm sure all writers struggle to overcome. If I stopped doubting myself, I doubt I'd ever improve. Of course, there should be limits--it doesn't help to angst over reviews or stop drafting out of paralysis. Fans and good reviews help a lot. Trolls and bad reviews, not so much. Still learning how to deal with those.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with music?

Music! I can't concentrate in silence.

Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is….

I wish I'd written Harry Potter, because then I would be a really awesome writer and know how to do some killer worldbuilding. I mean, damn.

If you could travel in a time machine, would you go back to the past or into the future?

The past! I'd be highly tempted to go back to 1913, the year of my book, and do some research for my alternate history world. Because I'm a researchaholic. And there were some really sexy men's suits back then.

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title of the book should be? Why?

The title should be Boneheaded because it's true. ;)
