Excerpt

I wake with an overwhelming sense of happiness. Every fiber of my being tingles. I stretch and wiggle my toes, surprised when a soft, raspy tongue slathers the side of my face. I reach down and ruffle the soft white fur on the dog’s neck and roll off the bed. I pad my way to the bathroom, humming.

Snatching the hairbrush from beside the sink, I begin brushing my hair, but the sight of my reflection catches me off guard and my hands freeze. I’ve never looked so…happy before.

My lips are red and bruised, as if I’ve spent the previous evening kissing sandpaper, and I’m sore in some very interesting places. Beautiful, blooming love marks have erupted all over my body. On my right shoulder is a mating mark—a full teeth impression, the type I’ve always dreamed of.

Oh, my!

Nails scrape across the hardwood floor as the white husky pads from the bathroom to the front door and back again. He stares at me, arctic blue eyes piercing me with their intensity. He returns to the front door and gives it a scratch.

When did I get a dog?

I take a few moments to think about it, and can only recall waking up yesterday and going outside for water. Then, nothing. Not a single solid memory forms. Certainly, no pet shopping of any kind.
Brow furrowed, I slip on a simple housedress and head to the door to let the dog out.

He wanders a few feet away and marks a spot or two before padding back to the cabin. Inside, he jumps onto the hide-a-bed as if he owns the place.

Confused, I head for the kitchen to make tea. My favorite cinnamon blend is empty, so I reach for the generic. When I pull out my tea-cup, a piece of paper falls out.

I unfold it to find a note scribbled across it.
